the handles of his swords look a bit like horse cocks.
Edited because: Rule 7 edit.
It was glorious.
On the other hoof, the way Celestia and Luna were talking in the flashback made it sound as though the Tree of Harmony was already shrouded in myth and legend, and Celestia specifically identified the Tree as what was keeping the Everfree Forest from expanding.
More likely after Discord’s defeat they built the castle over the Tree’s hiding spot. I can totally buy them doing the whole ‘keeping the inhabitants at bay’ thing, though. I mean, the Everfree Forest itself is restrained by the Tree of Harmony. Doesn’t mean a pack of timberwolves or a flock of basilisks can’t leave it to cause trouble.
honestly the everfree reminds me of what happens when non-native flora and fauna are introduced to a livable habitat. to me it sounds like it was kinda discord’s version of a zoo and they built a castle in it so they could keep the inhabitants at bay… that or they moved into swamp castle from monty python and the holy grail
“The nerve of some ponies! I work my hooves off to get all those lovely secret doors and the pipe organ working again, and not only do they try to steal from the castle and run around causing all sorts of mischief, they have the NERVE to call me ridiculous!”
I’d honestly prefer that over the shadowy figure being some villain.
If the pony in the shadows there turns out to be somepony who was taking care of the place I shall be quite pleased at the neatly-filled logic hole.
1.) Word of Faust is that the Everfree took over the area where the castle was.
Whelp, that’s been retconned out, not that it was technically ever actually part of the series. The Tree of Harmony is under the Castle, and it was keeping the Everfree in check back before the Sisters yanked the Elements. Unless the Royal Sisters moved the Tree, which seems unlikely, they were ruling from within the Everfree Forest.
2.) Jiminy cricket Equestria, don’t you have a sodding antiquities law?!?
Yeah… I doubt that it will ever be brought up, but it looked like the Castle was just abandoned the night of the fight with Nightmare moon, and no one ever went back to get their stuff.
Combined with the good condition that everything is in, you can make the argument that some ponies have actually been living out their and maintaining the place.
2.) Jiminy cricket Equestria, don’t you have a sodding antiquities law?!? That tapestry belongs to either
(a) Celestia and Luna
or, more likely,
(b) The state of Equestria.
I mean, Discord’s digit! You have a castle full of ancient tapestries, mechanisms, stained glass, masonry, armor, powerful magical artifacts and books for crying out loud, books exposed to the elements for a thousand years what are they magically preserved? and just lying around for anypony to mess with them?
Rarity, quit touching that thing! Restoring a tapestry isn’t like mending a fricking sock!
I like to think that the Everfree Forest happens to be home to an unusually large concentration of monsters, like the hydra, timberwolves and other assorted nasties.
That might explain why Fluttershy thought it was too late in the day to head out to the castle. Maybe the castle is magically protected (hence why the books in the library hadn’t rotted away), but the path through the forest most likely isn’t. And if a lot of the monsters are nocturnal…
On the other limb, the place was still dangerous enough that no else just nipped over to the tree, and Celestia didn’t think that the modern forest needed the Elements returned. Could argue it either way, but there really isn’t any proof of the forest itself being different back in the day, just having more permanent residents.
The reasons listed for the forest being dangerous were that the weather and animals are under their own control.
How that is different from Equestria prior to the coming of the ponies has never really been explored. Equestria used to get by without ponies, after all, and that didn’t freak anyone out.
the animals inside actually hunt and kill one another?
We know that the carnivorous animals of Equestria still need to eat meat. If the ponies aren’t doing their killing for them, and it looks like Fluttershy’s level of management is the exception rather than the rule, than the animals outside of the Everfree are already doing that.
Concerning the “Celestia and Luna looked pretty beat up” bit, I’d like to point out that was during the midst of Discord’s reign and so the forest was probably all chaosy and stuff.
And Celestia did mention that the Tree of Harmony would keep the Everfree Forest under control as long as it had magic, so I think the idea that the place used to be safe (well, safe-r) under the rule of the two sisters has merit. At the very least, the presence of the princesses and the guards would keep the meaner monsters at bay.
By the by, isn’t the reason the Forest is considered dangerous the fact that it has its own weather patterns (as opposed to the Pegasi controlling it) and the animals inside actually hunt and kill one another?
All I said that was that the castle was still within the Everfree even when the Royal Sisters ruled. Aside from that…
Celestia and Luna looked pretty beat up when the took the Elements from the Tree of Harmony, so it seems like it was still dangerous then.
We don’t know what the Everfree was like during when Celestia and Luna ruled from there. I mentioned my own theory, but I’m not sure that even guards would be required. As Zecora shows, someone can live in the Everfree as long as they keep their head about them. For all that the Everfree is considered an incredible danger by the ponies, it hasn’t really been that deadly.
Ponies just walking along a vague path can reach the castle just fine even at the start of the series. When it was a major location with large amounts of traffic? Should have been even safer.
That’s not what I meant, read my statement again. How do we know it was just as dangerous and monster infested over a thousand years ago when it was first built? The power of the alicorn sisters would have blessed the forest and made it safe for them and their subjects; after it was abandoned following Nightmare Moon’s banishment, the darkness crept it. My theory at least.
I kinda prefer it that way.
The Element Tree is right under the old castle, so the castle was always inside the Everfree. Take that as you will.
Because they had guards posted to protect travelers from the monsters.
Maybe cause when they first built it THOUSANDS of years ago, it wasn’t such a bad place? All we can do is speculate though, until we get an episode dedicated to the history of the Everfree Forest.
In a forest filled with some of the most dangerous monsters known to ponykind? Not likely.
That begs the question, of course: why the fuck did Celestia and Luna build their castle in such a dangerous place?
Rarity, the unknown camerapony!
wipes the tears from her cheeks
