The villains were considered legendary heroes of their time, and what stolen relics are you talking about? They were all enchanted by the leader of the villains, not explicit property of the nation they betrayed. I believe that the leader also says that she thought that her nation’s policy for withholding such powerful artifacts for only the most loyal and capable of soldiers was wrong.

It sounds like hack writing because it’s being painted as hack writing.

In the setting, the amount of time and energy required to enchant relics of that strength and ability is extraordinary. It’s explicitly stated that at the current point in the timeline, there’s a very noticeable lack of capable soldiers that were considered loyal enough to be worthy of meticulously crafted and enchanted gear. However, the problem might not be a lack of capable soldiers, but that the requirements to acquire such gear were set way too high.

I mean, I can understand them walking off with powerful relics; they were certainly in a position to possess them… but we’ve seen literally 0 other relics other than the one only the Apple lineage can use (so of course Applejack gets it) and the somewhat fancy armor that the other named special forces guy has. The supposed elite forces of the army are inexplicably a billion times worse (and worse equipped) than every single villain.

After about the third time the hero lived because the antagonists dragged them across the finish line for their own mysterious reasons I stopped caring. The heroes accomplished nothing.

Ouch. That’s some seriously hack writing. To even maintain the efficiency at which they were previously operating, they’d need support from somewhere, at least.

I ended up giving up on this fic. The villains were inexplicably more powerful and better equipped than the nation-sized army they stopped working for, and whenever they showed up every “special forces” soldier that didn’t have a name lost about 50 IQ points.
