But they are also stuck in tropes. Yeah they subvert a few things that usually come with the character type. Twilight is still the bookworm, Rainbow Dash is still the hotheaded jock, Applejack is till the cowgirl, Fluttershy is still the shrinking violet, Rarity is still the drama queen, and Pinkie Pie is still the Cloudcuckoolander. You can never get away from tropes. Ever.

And common sense tell you that if you spend literally your entire life doing hard work in a farm chances are that you are going to be buffer that people who don’t. Or are you seriously suggesting people should draw a pale, weak and skinny Applejack, bimbo Twilight, fat and unathletic Rainbow Dash, and incredible buff Rarity? There is playing with a trope or subverting a trope and then there is being stupid and unrealistic.

@Sjogre
It is a choice but the problem is that AJ designs like these are becoming too much the norm among humanized mane 6 art.

What I liked about the show is that the writers made a point to have the characters go beyond the common tropes and give them their own dimensions uniquely theirs: It would have been easy to have Rarity be the queen bee character. But not only is this avoided, Rarity can paid attention to detail and kick rears at the sametime. Applejack appears messy, with a lack of manners, and loves her farm but the truth is she could of/could still have a different sophisticated life–heck she actually wanted to be Applejewel once.

However despite how well rounded the mane 6 are many fans want to stuff the group back into these neatly conceived, simple notions they grew up with. A lot of mane 6 humanized art reflects this now. The explanations alone for some of the trope, type-casting designs are depressing: Applejack is on a farm therefore she must look like Big Mac? Twilight likes to study so she must be pale and weak? Rainbow Dash has an ego so she must be short with the body of a ten year old? Did they not see Applejack wear a dress and her long distance fighting? Did they not see Twilight doing well in the Running of the Leaves or when she physically tussled with her friends? They not see Rainbow acing a lot of ground based competitions, keeping up with AJ and even beating her at arm wrestling and the Spike toss?

It’s like people are saying that the mane 6 can’t be anything but stereotypes!

She may be a little athletic, but I highly doubt she’s buff like AJ is in this picture, which even taking into account all the work she has in her farm seems exaggerated, unless she goes to the gym. IMO she’d look closer to RD is depicted here, but less athletic and a tad more muscular in her arms and legs, because otherwise she would look weird and not that attractive, in that kind of dress she wore in “Simple Ways”. Feminine clothes are designed to emphasize feminine attributes, after all.

@Millennial Dan
Her attack on AJ in RoH was definitely not anything like boxing.

True, but she rarely uses elaborate moves like that. I was referring to her preference for basic attacks, rather than a specific style.

@Background Pony #9B98
Rarity is very skilled at fighting since she doesn’t go for headbutting or tackling others, rather doing precise kicks

Properly using headbutts or grapples is not a simple thing. Absence or presence of those things indicate fighting style, not skill level.

She mostly uses straightforward kicks with her front or back legs, with the exception of the aforementioned jump kick. No throws, holds, or even elaborate positioning or setups. She’s relying on brute force more than finesse. She’s good at it, obviously, but she’s not a light fighter that dances around her opponent.

Heck, just the fact that she prefers to move in close instead of hanging back and throwing stuff with her magic speaks volumes.

@Millennial Dan
She came in second at the Sisterhooves Social, which implies above average conditioning, otherwise she would have ended up near the middle of the pack.

Well yeah, that’s part of what I’m saying, in a way. It just doesn’t seem to me that Rarity’s physique, specifically, must be noticeably more athletic than the average pony’s in order to be able to do that stuff.
Background Pony #57D1
please guys, stop trying to force your waifus ideal body types on fanart you didn’t draw

@Millennial Dan
Ok, I will have to ask you to step out of this conversation. There’s no place for your logic shaped holes in this internet discussion

@Sjogre
I’m thinking the one time she jump at and kicked AJ and then Rarity spun in the air in the same movement. It happens so fast I’m not surprised you didn’t notice.

in the show, where they have copy/paste bodies, it’s the only way it can work the way you want it to.

I…. Huhn? Rarity having an athletic figure is impossible? I’m not talking identical twins, I just think that they’d have similar builds even in a more detailed artstyle.

Only because it doesn’t match your ideal image you have in your head, doesn’t mean it’s wrong, dude.

When did I call it wrong? I actually like this image and the designs. I never complained about it, or said that it should change.

I’ve got my own theory about them, but I don’t care if no one else believes it.

And remember Rarity is NOT a bruiser, she knows how to kick, just look how she does a flying spin kick, that’s not an idiot throwing punches around blindly.

Knowing how to throw a kick doesn’t mean much if you don’t have any force behind it, and Rarity has always been shown as hitting hard, even when using basic moves. More to the point, martial arts training requires a good deal of physical conditioning, so that actually points to her being a stronger type. Even outside of fights, she’s displayed above average athleticism. Came in second at the Sisterhooves Social, without any practice or time to prepare.

When does she do a flying spin kick? I’m saying that you’re lying, I just don’t remember when she does that, and it sounds cool. She mostly uses more straightforward attacks. More boxing than kung fu.

So, because AJ has family in a higher social level automatically means she has the figure Rarity wants for herself… That makes no sense at all!

It’s more that Applejack can fit in Rarity’s clothes and make it look good. That wouldn’t be possible if they had different body types.

I don’t have any objection to Applejack being given a different body type, I just think that giving them a similar figure would go well with the mirror image thing that they have going on.

For the record, if someone does that, I’d rather that they remember that Rarity is actually quite the bruiser, rather than a delicate waif.
Background Pony #57D1
@Dragonmage
you really need to look at an actual body builder before saying that somebody looks like one.

Seriously, I love this look for AJ rather than have her look like a super model because you guys are twisting and reinterpreting things that never happened on the show.

So, because AJ has family in a higher social level automatically means she has the figure Rarity wants for herself… That makes no sense at all!

No, stop that guys! It was funny at first, but reading more and more delusional stuff from you it’s getting really creepy! Really stop! It’s like you don’t understand basic interactions or the fact that one is copy/paste bodies and this is fan art!
Background Pony #9FF7
@Dragonmage
Yup, only that you’re working hard don’t automatically mean you have to look like Ahnald Schwarzenegger||…when he was younger||.

@Sjogre
A very good point. I agree with you. People tend to forget that AJ has that Manehatten background and even Rarity admitted she pulled off Applejewel well. She couldn’t do that if she had such a different body type.

@Mega Rapidash
This is becoming a bigger and bigger problem with human AJ art: the stereotyping and matching with her brother.

@Background Pony #9B98
Thematically, it would make sense.

Aside from that, Sisterhooves Social had Rarity able to pass as Applejack after a coating of mud and Simple Ways had Applejack fit into one of Rarity’s dresses.

So, not unreasonable.
Background Pony #57D1
@Sjogre
uh, having the life one wants doesn’t mean having the body one wants. Rarity wants the glamor, the fashion, the recognition.

It has absolutely nothing to do with AJ’s body o_O

@chaos15
The show has been oddly consistent with the idea that Applejack could have had the life that Rarity wants.

They’ve got a weird kind of shadow archetype thing going on. Not sure how to describe it.
