Having the Princesses scowling like that might be their anger towards Lord Tirek, leading to Twilight in her empowered form and her castle underneath being the result of his defeat by the Magic of Friendship.
 
Celestia’s scowl being from the Return of Harmony towards Discord, Luna’s from perhaps the flashback of her fall to the Dark Side in Princess Twilight Sparkle, and Cadence’s from The Crystal Empire towards King Sombra.
