The griffin team in question were background characters with no speaking parts in a single episode. They’re not main characters that the show revolves around. And again, from the very beginning of season one we’ve had different species and different body types even among ponies, so you can’t tell me that if unicorns, pegasi and earth ponies were supposed to be so different from each other beyond the small traits of wings and horns, they couldn’t and wouldn’t have designed them that way from the get go.
 
And again, we know they can and do interbreed. It’s likely relatively commonplace given the lack of any shocked responses when it has come up.

Conservation of Flash resources. They’re going to recycle the same body type as often as possible to save time, which is why the griffin team in the Equestria Games was two Gilda recolors and a Gustave la Grande. The question becomes how much is intentional and how much is compensating for the limitations of the medium.

Yeah. But look at the ponies in the show… other than wings or horns, they’re exactly the same. Same hooves (and we’ve seen cloven hooves on the cows and bison so it’s not like they couldn’t have given them to unicorns if they wanted them to look like that), same tails, etc. We know from the show the three races interbreed, so they are not all that distinct from each other and aren’t meant to be so drastically different.

Two words: Dog breeds. A single species can show incredible variation within itself, especially if there’s an element of artificial selection at work. And if different ponies find different traits attractive… (though chest fluff seems universal.)

No I didn’t mean this particular pic. I’m talking about when and where some artists first started the thing with drastically setting the different pony races apart with the “classical unicorn” stylization etc. The first time I remember really noticing it was with Briskby’s work and earthsong is another one that’s well known for it. Among others.

I think Tumblr centered artists are the ones that started the racially dysmorphic thing with ponies aren’t they?

I find it incredulous that AJ would be the smoothest of them all. Look at those impeccably well kept hooves, that’s just inconceivable.

Never did care for the drastically different races. Artistic style is one thing and I don’t mind it, even when ponies are heavily stylized, but making the races so different from each other makes no sense. May as well make them separate species.
