I guess you can rate this stuff grimdark depending on how you look at it, but given the show’s own track record, I think that it’s a bit of a stretch calling it full grimdark. the way I see it, this messes with a lot of things the show has done with the same characters, with seemingly no differences or variations to what we’re seeing here. (examples: Party of One insanity, Cutiemark Chronicles - Twilight transforming her parents into plants, Discord - Discord being Discord)
 
really, too much of this detail is left ambiguous to call it things like, Full murder mode, or add implications of death, especially when turning ponies to plants is proven by the show to not be fatal in their universe and Discord does, these things.. Anyway, take my counterargument for what you will.

its not really for certain that Celestia was the cause for discord’s death or if that tree is even fluttershy.
 
That being said decapitation is still decapitation so a grimdark tag might not be out of place.

Semi-grimdark is for “mild injuries” and “not full-on murder”
 
I’m not really sure myself. Just because it’s done in the show’s style doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a “lighter tone” that semi-grimdark implies.

I’d say semi, at best. (Note that images with a lighter tone, such as dark comedy, should be semi-grimdark.)

“I see you and fluttershy are getting along quite nicely.” Celestia began “Like two peas in a pod am I right?” Celestia finished with a smirk, her lips sucking dry air so hard she successfully fooled herself into tasting tea that did not exist.
 
Sunddenly she rocked her head forward in a classic spit take, burying the fact that she just spat air in her peals of laughter. “Ha ha haa oh Discord glad too see you’ve still got that amazing wit and timing!” She bellowed as she struggled to contain the fit of giggles.
 
She took another dusty sip as she eyed the bonsai tree ever so slightly sway in the general direction of the petrified head placed next to it.
 
Celestia’s motherly nature took over and a gentle smile graced her muzzle. Reaching across the table she patted the stone cranium, taking in its frozen look of pure horror.  
“Don’t worry Dizzy will find the rest of you soon enough, I have the guards looking into as we speak.”  
She finished with another swig of nothing from her teacup, Her smile slowly morphed into a soft scolding one. She placed her teacup down and looked straight into dead lifeless eyes sitting across from her.
 
“Honestly though; if you made better effort in keeping your limbs attached to your body, we would not be in this situation in the first place.” She softly chided the head like a teacher scolding a misbehaving student.
 
She turned her gaze to the Pink bonsai tree quietly seated next to her.
 
“You could learn a few things from Fluttershy, she is quite adept a keeping herself together.”

Somepony needs a sanity cuddle badly.

There’s very little touches and yet they show nicely how utterly Celestia has snapped.

Someone who’s still alive needs to hug Celestia and tell her everything’s going to be okay.

Hmm, this theme is quite frequent in some fanfictions. If I would assume, smashing the statue of Discord would just fail: it’s strong prison, after all. BUT if it’s weakened, it’s would just free Discord instead.

I bet there’s a story here, somewhere. I’d read it.
