That really is what I love about this show’s rich antagonists, is they don’t just default to businessmen being total slimy evil bastards. They don’t shy away at all from them using financial and legal leverage to get what they want, but they time and time again write the businessmen as actual sympathetic people with wants, needs, and emotions just like the protagonists. It makes this kind of story so much more interesting because it’s not a case of good vs evil or right vs wrong, but just a case of two people clashing over something they both want, only one can have it, and in the end one will get it :D

I actually see very little difference between these two characters. Both are decent and entirely reasonable people who want something, have a right to it, and are using power to get it. Though, in Filthy Rich’s defense he admitted defeat and walked away, as opposed to resorting to violence and endangering others to get it :)

Filthy Rich is the hero she didn’t deserve. Some say he wanted to save the land by making it profitable by the other side of the lake.

By the way, the issue of land ownership and native freedom has come up before in MLP. In the Over a barrel episode the bison, representing native Americans, are being driven away fron their native running grounds by Appaloosa cowboys. That part isn’t fiction, it really happened in the wild west, native Americans who are traditional hunter gatherers moved and roamed from place to place freely, but then the cowboys arrived and started dividing the land and putting up fences. The indians tried to continue their traditional migrations, but soon found themselves getting shot and being driven into so called indian ‘reserves’. To sum up my ‘‘biased’’ thoughts on the issue I’d like to quote Sitting Bull ‘‘How can you buy or sell the sky, the land…The love of possessions is a disease in them. These people have made many rules that the rich may break, but the poor may not…They claim this mother of ours, the earth, for their own use, and fence their neighbor away…’’

All our businesses are all based on the philosophical principles from The Art of War. No one can deny that a lot of business tactics are purely Machiavellian. We even have economic hitmen. Not even the mighty government is innocent of employing practically any means to get money, including actions that harm small minorities or ruin the environment. Enframing,turning everyone and everything into resources and materials to be exploited. Patenting genes from the natural world.Enclosure-the act of claiming a wild territory as a private business investment.Call me bias all you want.None of it justifies the harm it all causes.

And yet his actions still cause a desperate woman to use dangerous magic… so I don’t agree with the idea that he’s neutral. Besides we don’t even know how he got his hands on that land. And anyway, the Filthy Rich character isn’t exactly a ‘good guy’, I’ve never seen him be outright evil, but I’ve never seen him do anything good for that matter. Besides, I have enough life experience to know that todays criminals all wear suits and use legal paperwork to cover their trail or hide daggers in their smiles.

Despite his evil grins throughout his scenes in the movie, he does nothing wrong. He even says he’s given them extensions already.

Just to be clear here, defaulting on your payment for ancestral land that has been passed down the generations is not the same thing as skipping out on your rent for your appartment or your car. In fact there’s plenty of stories from the wild west and even today, where local landowners were pushed,conned,coerced or bullied out of their land and or blackmailed into selling it. Which is possibly how the owner of camp everfree lost hers.Real estate and land ownership is a seriously messy, ugly and unscrupulous affair. Just read and watch about it in real life.
