Hey! Stop insinuating that shitty theory used by the ending defender fuckshits to defend the *ahem* “ambitious” writing of Mac Walters.
As for how it applies here: Possibly. Given that this period of Equestrian history is very poorly understood by us, the viewer, it’s hard to say as of writing what actually brought about the NMM crisis. I am leaning towards indoctrination or corruption from evil magic, as that is what Luna hinted at in Luna Eclipsed.
Pretty much. Not appreciated in the show, loved by the fanbase, while Celestia is the opposite, by comparison to Luna’s bloated fanbase.

Making Luna a woobie definitely turns her characterization into a cardboard cutout. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks that moral quandaries and looking through the lens of someone who you know is doing wrong is a compelling perspective. I actually ‘like’ Luna having to deal with accountability for doing something in a sane mind (not full possession by mostly contrived “Nightmare Forces”, maybe a nudging “voice in the head” influence at the most that affirms gradually increasing thoughts of vengeance…). It lets you explore the age-old “ends versus the means” of night is awesome, but world domination for its sake at a hat-drop is a bit extreme.
Gonna have to be more specific with whom you’re referring to, friend.
If I looked like that, I apologize, it was not my intention to sound like that especially in an image like this, which as you say, it doesn’t follow the narrative. I just wanted to point that some parts of the fandom seem that want to give her that extra level of sympathy, or “woobiness”, despite of the canon information we know. I also don’t like these “Luna is blameless” or “it’s all Celestia’s fault” pics… but they seem to pop out from time to time.
I always tend to give her a bit more responsability than just becoming twisted with dark magic, though. At least these two episodes of Season 4 clarified a bit the situation… and raised some questions as well.
To me, her responsibility in the matter and the fact that she became so twisted that Celestia had no choice but to banish her make the whole thing even more tragic. In that sense, I’ll agree that portrayals of her as completely blameless are not only incorrect but make her less compelling, but I also tend to see a lot of “ugh, more woobie woona” comments on images that don’t seem to follow that narrative.
True, like the Mass Effect indoctrination, like you said.
>More like an influence than an outright possession.
In short, indoctrination. Like I likened it to.
While she may be sympathethic, which I don’t deny, it seems some parts of the fandom sometimes go to excessive legths to give her extra sympathy. I didn’t use the word with a pejorative meaning, though, I only meant that some people will make her seem even more sympathethic than she is.
According to canon she was envious that ponies played in the day and slept at night, but nowhere is said she felt lonely or unloved. It may be the case, of course, but I don’t remember hearing it in the Episode 1 of Season 1.
The second interpretation, true an outside force influences her actions, but it seems unlikely that possesses her as a puppet. More like an influence than an outright possession.
I agree with you wholeheartedly, it’s not necessarily the case. But a few times the “woobiefication” it’s used to erase her responsability in the matter and make her seem completely innocent.
Source: An innumerable amount of “Luna crying on moon” and the whole “Tyrantlestia” fad, which (while admittedly mostly a joke) started out because people reasoned that only a terrible person/pony would send She that Cannot Do Wrong to the moon.
That is correct. And under that definition, she most certainly is a woobie. Think of the two predominant canon-compliant interpretations of Luna:
Either way, she is unambiguously sympathetic. The fact that you and others use the term as a perjorative implies that the word “woobie” means more than just sympathetic, however. Usually when a snide remark about “woobie woona” is made, the implication is that those who are sympathetic to her view her as completely helpless and innocent. This is not necessarily the case.
What Kleptomage and Winter Moon said. Luna has been made into the penultimate “pitiful character” archetype, a relic from Season 1 that has persisted to this day because by God people need someone to be a loser so they can latch onto them and say, “Hey, she struggles just like I do! That’s why she’s my favorite.”
A woobie is a character that makes you feel sympathy for him or for her, right? Or so I recall from the TV Tropes page.
I don’t think you fully understand what that word means.
They’ll find a way. They always find a way to make her a woobie.
You’re loudly fighting an enemy that’s barely even there.
Last I checked, Luna having been indoctrinated or something along those lines by something nasty, like Faust said, still stood.
The fact that it absolutely mangles any and all attempts for Luna’s apologists to make her into some kind of woobie Woona who didn’t actually deserve to get Moon’d.
