As soon as folks agreed that this pony was Doctor Whooves, I’ve seen quite a number of ponies as his companion.

There’s been Derpy, Minuette/Colgate, Roseluck, Twilight Sparkle, and even Pinkie Pie.

I think fan projects have elevated the Derpy/Doctor pairing. (Voiced comics, Tumblrs, animations, etc.) The more people see it, I’m guessing the more people take a liking to it.
