Memetic eldritch horror
From a certain perspective our names are rather weird, in that they are just made up nonsense words most of the the time

Also, since the show is widely translated into other languages, that’ll make it less likely for a foreign language to prominently show within the show.
(I remembered that fact after I posted my last message. Sorry about the double post)

My apologies. Her name is Italian. It sounds similar to Spanish, which is where I messed up at. There are some other points were non-English stuff, such as the cute-ceañera, which is a play on quinceañera, which is a celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday in Latin American regions. Also I’m sure Discord used a phrase from a foreign language as well, though I can’t remember the phrase or find it for that matter.
That said, I doubt we’ll get direct acknowledgment of a foreign language in the show, unless they do an episode about foreign cultures and their differences. Sticking to one language with a few differences for gags and such helps to keep the events easily understandable..

Really? I always assumed she was Italian - though I might just be getting that from music class. Sombra does mean Shadow in both Spanish and Portuguese, if I’m not mistaken, but… we haven’t actually seen a pony speaking another language. Pinkie did at one point start singing in Spanish during the goof off - but even then that’s Pinkie. It’s never mentioned again and we’ve never heard anything like it. Apple Bloom once spoke French, but for all we know that’s a griffin language - Gustave la Grande isn’t exactly an anglophone name. And, for all we know, Cadence is the exception, not the rule.

Spanish, Italian and French, (possibly others that I’m missing but I can’t remember any more than those three,) or their equivalents exist in their world, that much is for certain. Whether or not it’s from a different species, (diamond dog, griffin, Ahuizotl, siren, sea pony, kelpie, deer, the show and the comics together have given us a lot of potential origins,) we can’t be certain. Until the show acknowledges somepony speaking a foreign language that is apparently common in Equestria, we can’t exactly say if they have similar names to us. That is to say, having names that descend down from older languages but still have a meaning if translated.

I once read a fanfic that had a running gag where changelings had human names. The ponies found it very strange.

“Do your kind have names, changeling?”

“Uh, yeah? My name’s Steve. And this is my friend Phil. And my other friend Lisa.”

“…”

“…What?”

This actually makes sense. Ponies only have one language while humans have several, so they generally don’t have names that mean something in another language.

Supposedly the name means ‘Gentle Birth’ or some equivalent in ye olde Irish. People seem to forget that our regular names are just very old mish-mashes of words too.
