Free Advertising on Derpibooru + Privacy Policy Updates

I was hearing from people on Imgur when I made a post relating to this site. It was hardly relevant, but the whined about it anyways.

So…we’re just allowing ads for porn now? I guess we always have, but seeing actual sex in the ads is nothing if not jarring. I’d like to be able to browse this site in public.

I’d really like you to highlight what in this announcement lead you to believe that so that it can be clarified.
 
We’ve had a system in place for half a decade to split ads between SFW and NSFW pages, and that won’t be changing, particularly not when the whole point of this announcement was “we don’t actually need ads”.

Why not let Google handle the advertising? I hear they’re pretty ethical.

If you read the advertising policy that was linked in the OP, it specifically says:

Not sure if you’re being serious or not, but Google Adsense does a lot of tracking, profiling, analytics, etc. That’s not exactly what we view as ethical - we’ve been extremely privacy-focused long before GDPR forced everyone else to be.
 
Additionally, Derpibooru is non-profit. The site’s operating costs are covered entirely by Patreon at this point. If we went with a commercial advertising service like Google, then we’d end up having profit, which is not our goal.

As the saying goes, “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.” I’m sorry to hear that PW was one of the better, if not the best, ad agencies out there.
 
I can at least say that I actually clicked on their links from time to time because I genuinely thought they were interesting… now I’m struggling to remember some of the webcomics they advertised…

I hope the future does not happen bad things.

Hypothetical question: If someone finished a YouTube video that they worked with a team on, could that video be advertised here? Not that I would want to do this, I’m just curious. Advertising through the simple posting of art from the video (on Derpibooru), and on Equestria Daily, would be fine.

Though PW shutting down is sad news, I have to say this is overall great news for Derpibooru - that you guys are financially stable enough not to need ads for income at all is incredible, and your stance on privacy (re: ads especially) is great, especially considering the state of ads elsewhere.
 
I do wonder, though - since you’re hosting these ads free of charge, and given everything else you’ve said, are derpi ads now 100% free of tracking/analytics? Like, do you even count how many hits any given ad receives?

Honestly, It’d probably be a case-by-case basis. A massive collab video with dozens of contributor and lots of creative effort like “Anthology” or “Doors” would almost certainly get advertising, whereas a 2-3 person PMV may not necessarily qualify.

Actually, thinking about it, the server does log who clicks an ad and what page they were viewing, as that’s simply part of the NGINX logs. However, only five people have access to see those logs, they’re only accessed for diagonsis and troubleshooting information, and they’re automatically deleted after fourteen days.
 
No analytics are ran against those logs. We really don’t care who’s clicking on what unless it’s breaking something.

Just to clarify, could I pay $20 for two weeks of advertising, or would I be paying for a full month?

The 1month/$40 is just a simple standard, it can be split in weeks as you say. And if it’s pony related, would be free.
