For whatever reason, porn seems to make up half of art in general. I must be the only one who can’t stand porn, maybe because I live in Australia, where porn is technically illegal and we have a group of down-talking children’s performers funded by the government…

I decided to run some numbers on that subject, because I was genuinely curious.
 
So, by numbers on this site alone, there’s 120,816 images tagged with “shipping”, of which 63,729 are tagged “shipping, safe”, a number that rises to 72,625 if we consider images just tagged with “suggestive” not to be porn.
 
If we broaden our search to all art, there are just shy of one million and sixty-eight hundred thousand images on this site, and of those 292,995 are tagged either “questionable” or “explicit”, whereas 1,103,812 are tagged “safe”.
 
So, after crunching some numbers…
 
Porn of various levels of pornosity does, in fact, make up around half of all shipping images, which does make it a bit of a chore to find good SFW art of any given ship you might like.
 
As for art in general, though, porn makes up around 17.5% ([292,995 / 1,680,000] x 100) of the stuff on this site – a little less than a fifth. The remaining four fifths and change, while not necessarily SFW (since it could still be grimdark, grotesque or whatever else), are at least not pornographic.

I think half is a bit generous of an assumption. As Frustration in Excelsis kind of indicated, most of the time this site hovers around 70% safe artwork, with the remaining 30% split fairly evenly between the suggestive/questionable varieties and the explicit stuff. Where the problem comes in, at least as far as I can see, is that the porn gets a disproportionate amount of attention. The explicit stuff dominates the trending images fairly readily, and a lot of the recent comments too.
 
And I’ll freely admit, as someone who does look at explicit stuff from time to time, I do think it’s unfortunate that a lot of really good, SFW images by halfway decent artists don’t get the publicity or attention they deserve. But I’m also not sure what a solution to that would be either.

So I decided to assume that “screencap” (100,218), “idw” (10,316) and “toy” (15,906) cover at least a significant majority of non-fanart material between them, which gets 1,553,560 (1,680,000 - 100,218 - 10,316 - 15,906) images that can be assumed to be mostly fan-made.
 
As it turns out, the amount of non-fanart on this site is small enough not to significantly impact the percentages of the previous calculations, simply because fanmade material outnumbers official stuff by a lot.
 
I’m not sure what you meant by different ships, though.

For example, Pear Butter and Bright Mac are likely to have a lot more Safe pics that AJ and Big Mac, who are likely to have mostly Explicit pics.

Yeah, that’s a good point. I don’t really have the time to go and sort through all different ships for this sort of thing, but I definitely see where you’re coming from – the actual percentage of SFW versus NSFW is going to vary a lot between ship and ship. Incest ships especially are going to have very little that isn’t porn, I imagine.
 
Which, I mean, I don’t think it’s any great issue if someone is looking for “clean” material, but still.
