Actually, I looked up the brief scene we get of Big Macintosh as a young colt in Cutie Mark Chronicles and he has three eye shade thingies as opposed to his one later on in life, so you’re in the clear!

Weeeell, depending on how you look at it, even that’s not quite true. Trixie only has one ‘eye shade’ (supposedly retained from her original design as a stallion, since the vast majority of one-eye-shade ponies are stallions), but most foals have three so filly Trixie could have three.
