Good thing Toyota is bringing back the Toyota 86. Though, I don’t think that thing has ever went away, just existed under different badges.

Weren’t all CR-Xs FWD? (Except the one that Car & Driver stuck a second engine in, and its homebuilt descendants.) Either way, the CR-X is a really neat car, especially if you can find one in good shape.
 
Has there always been an “86” type Toyota? I’m having trouble remembering the last sporty RWD car Toyota made prior to the current GT86.

Toyota 86 has been around for years now.  
As Scion FRS and a partnership made Subaru BRZ.
 
Though, I’m still wondering what the differences between Scion FRS, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota 86 are.

The main difference is that the BRZ is always happy to see you, while the GT86 is mildly annoyed:  

 
Mechanically, I think the only difference is the BRZ has a slightly stiffer suspension, but I’m sure there are some minor interior differences. And the FR-S is the exact same car as the GT86. Toyota just changed the name and put it under the Scion brand for the US, for whatever reason.
 
The only other difference I can think of is, if I understand correctly, the BRZ is slightly rarer than the GT86 because the agreement between Toyota and Subaru stipulated something like a 5:3 production ratio. That might have changed, though.

BRZ are more common than Scion in my area. Only behind Nissan 370Z when it comes to being the most common specialized sports coupes.

Case in point might be the biggest lemon (for repairs and necessary upgrades over stock) I’ve had: this 1999 Chevrolet Suburban K2500 6.5 Turbo Diesel found on Craigslist. It’s been getting better though I’m not “home” yet.
 
Next Up:
 
Replace stock oil cooler lines (They’re known to be problematic)  
Replace rusty quarter panel  
Stay Alert, don’t crash (I’ve already had three near-head ons this week, two in this vehicle and one was from a Semi)

So, multiple compressor stages, no pistons, and multiple turbine stages. Serious question: at what point do we stop calling it a rotary engine and start calling it a turboshaft?

I have pondered that question myself… Interestingly rotary engines were used in early planes.

Mazda engines do get used in modern homebuilts and expreimentals. If I remember correctly, they’re good for high performance applications.

The Porsche Panamera Shooting Brake looks nice - better than the sedan in my opinion.

Definitely an improvement over the original, which everyone including me thought looked kinda disfigured.

The advantage to a rotary engine is very high RPMs, very wide powerband usually up to the redline, and small size. However they are notoriously unreliable and not exactly fuel efficient.
 
Also yes that gif is kinda hypnotic.
