I’m pretty sure rap was a big force in that decade because after pop rap went dead, gangsta rap came and was a dominating force until bling rap arrived and took it over by the late 90’s. The only other really big genres from the decade were R&B, alt rock, and eurodance cause pop music wouldn’t make a comeback until around 1997 after being mostly absent for so long.
The 2000’s you could make a good case but it was briefly at the top of its game in the mid 00’s with Crunk and eventually ringtone rap being the hot shit cause pop took a brief backseat after the TRL/boy band era came to an end and rock was kinda on its way out by the late 2000’s with the last gasps of it being big.
