No dude. Ghost Stories had one of the greatest dubs ever. The dub is so good it actually RAISES the quality of the show itself.

Pretty much. The company making it knew the original show was garbage but because of some weird contract shit it had to ne dubbed. So the production team told the dubbers “Fuck it. Just do whatever.” And the result was the most hilarious dub ever made.

I think Asuka sounds better in the dubs, and School Rumble’s dub is great

English, or any language other than Japanese like Filipino?
The Samurai X || Rurouni Kenshin anime English dub predates that of Cowboy Bebop.

The only question I need to ask is this: do you speak or understand Japanese?

any hilarious dub horror stories?
like how they dubbed a character as a girl only to find out that she’s a he and another character is dubbed as a man only to find out that he’s a she?
Roy-of-Austuria will get who I’m referring to.

I prefer subs over dubs myself, though I think this article is worth throwing in here (it’s an old article but still an interesting read IMO).

Dubs are considered a lesser way of viewing anime. It’s for casual fans, lazy fans, fans who can’t be bothered to read subs, fans that don’t really care about anime.

It’s not true. And quite frankly, I’m sick of hearing it.

sigh Lemme at least put this here…
The Japanese voice acting is always better than the English voice acting.Ha. No, seriously. Ha.Once upon a time, you could say this and know it to be true, not because you knew anything about the Japanese acting, but because the English dub acting was so absolutely amateurishly awful. These days, it’s rare for a dub to not be at least passable, and several studios consistently produce very good dubs. So to continue to make this argument, you have to be able to describe just how good the Japanese acting is.That’s where the argument breaks down. If you don’t speak Japanese, you cannot determine with any degree of accuracy whether the acting is any good. And please, spare me the hooie about how you can just tell by how well the actors emote. Any actor can emote. Emoting is one part of acting. There’s timing, enunciation, and all kinds of nuances that go into delivering a good line, all of which is lost on you if you don’t speak the language. Scott Frazier tells a funny story about how he learned one of his favorite anime (Dirty Pair) was horribly acted, once he became fluent in Japanese.The sad truth of the matter is that most Japanese anime voice acting is of average quality. This is not to impugn the Japanese; it’s merely Sturgeon’s Law at work. For every Akira Kamiya and Megumi Hayashibara, there are scores of actors giving uninspired, cookie-cutter performances.

If you want to have a serious discussion on this, because I know I don’t, hearing bad voice acting in a language I understand is infinitely more jarring to me than not understanding the language at all. Even in “the golden age of dubbing” the voice acting in even the best dubs falls very well short of the standards I have - ‘Specially when the dialogue in anime tends to be so weird, relatively speaking, it makes it feel like I’m watching the Room or something. Except I actually want to take this seriously instead of treating it like a shitty movie I’m only watching to revel in its awfulness.
If somebody else prefers dubs, I honestly don’t give a shit, that’s on them, but I like to make fun of things. It’s what I do and what I do well. Dubs are just an easy target.

Surprisingly enough, to an extent, I can tell bad Japanese voice acting, when I couldn’t before.

It’s not a matter of having high standards as much as even good dubs having mediocre voice acting in comparison to the many bits of Western Animation I watch.
I’m not gonna go and lower my standards, if they wanna put it into English then I expect something that sounds good in English.

He means even the best dubs don’t sound as good as many Western animation.
@ghostfacekiller39
I imagine it’s because it’s very difficult to make a good dub considering the limitations with working with animation that’s already been worked around existing dialogue with a different language. But what would be your thoughts on an anime that was recorded in English first, such as Tenchi Muyo in Love?

If a show in Western has bad voice acting then I just don’t watch it. Voice acting can really ruin everything for me if it’s not done well.
Western Animation does tend to have far better voice acting than dubs though.
@MethidMan
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen an anime produced in English first, so I can’t really say.
