Ok … the word “hostage” doesn’t appear anywhere in that article, so you shouldn’t be surprised to be asked to provide an actual link to what the hell you’re talking about, or some explanation of how you got that out of either 18 U.S. Code § 2258A, or the Network Enforcement Act.

I mean this - really - what are you talking about? There’s not even any requirement that corporate officers be listed for LLCs.

There’s an article about the clause. The initial article seems to have conflated cases of retribution by the government of India against Twitter in 2021-2022 and it’s interest in establishing digital laws similar to the EU’s, which in theory would’ve allowed them to persecute the local Twitter employees (or rather, the legal representative) under any made up pretext to force the platform to silence their opposition.

It’s admittedly less of an issue in the EU itself given that a company could simply move their legal representative to another member country should the one they’re in happen to have politicians willing to manufacture reasons to detain one if their platform wasn’t to their liking.

Or that, to my knowledge, no European country happens to have such politicians in charge yet (except perhaps Orbán’s Hungary). Granted, the ongoing rise of far-right populists such as the aforementioned might soon become a concern in that regard, but so far the rule of law is still relatively secure within the Union’s borders.

I find it incredibly difficult to understand how anyone would translate requiring legal contact information for companies with more than 250 employees as requiring the company to “offer up literal hostages”.

Is this about having a problem with holding owners, CEOs, etc, of companies responsible for the illegal actions of the company or something?

Like, Donald Trump shouldn’t be held responsible for things his companies did at his order or with his signoff or something like that? Some sort of “if you can afford to do it you have the freedom to do it” with no repercussions of any kind?

Because I am hearing people talk about that kind of thing. To me, allowing anyone to do anything via a corporate entity to do anything they want without any accountability of any kind sounds like a direct path to the dark timeline. And requiring officers of companies to do ‘due diligence’ to their responsibilities to their company and the laws under which their company operates makes good sense to me.

At the least, sure - they are ‘literal hostages’ to the law for not doing illegal things.

Is that how you are using ‘hostage’ in this case?

The requirement is that non-EU providers of mere conduit services, hosting services, caching services, online marketplaces, online platforms and online search engines must have a legal representative within the EU. That by itself is mitigated by the union being multiple countries.

The threat is that this can then be used by individual countries to do something India did in 2021-2022: a targeted retribution campaign against Twitter for refusing to ban the accounts of prominent figures that were bringing light to the farmer protests that crippled the country back then. If India had the same regulation the EU has, they would’ve been able to legally hunt down and imprison the designated legal representative on bullshit charges, or force them into leaving the country and force Twitter to offer up another ~~hostage~~ “representative” or be fined.

With the threat of far-right parties rising worldwide, we are going to see situations in which this will be seen as enviable by governments as a tool to force the hand of social media companies one way or another.

Back to Section 230, they could also just edit a small part to have it so that if a platform is displaying crimes like Kick is, and does little to nothing to prevent said crimes, they are liable for the actions they encourage their creators of doing. It’s almost like we want to update the law to meet the current state of the internet and not just throw it out like what some politicians want.

That’s more or less how the DMCA and FOSTA-SESTA work. If someone posts a violation of criminal law (copyright infringement or sex trafficking respectively), you’re expected to take it down ASAP, and failing to do so makes the site liable. They’re not without problems of their own, but they do seem to work, creating carveouts to 230 while preserving the general principle of it. Another law in that vein could effectively address whatever they’re complaining about this time.

It’s worth noting this is not because the UN uncovered that the Gaza health ministry was perpetrating some fraud or anything, but that the initial figure included incomplete identification, something the health ministry has readily admitted to and afaik, never hid from the world

As it turns out it’s hard to fully identify casualty figures when you are getting bombed back into the stone age

Producer prices rose more than expected in April, with core prices rising .5% vs an expected .3%.

That being said, the March numbers were revised down rather significantly, dropping from .3% to .1%.

This means that overall core prices rose about the same as what was actually expected, which is why the stock market didn’t plunge and Powell stayed pretty neutral at his speech.

Inflation is still around, and sticky, but the revised numbers means it’s not as surgey as April’s numbers first appear.
