CalArts is not a style, its a business standard. It’s cheap, low-quality, easy to produce animation that you don’t need actually talented animators to produce that allows you to churn out a series a quickly and cheaply as possible. That’s why every cartoon that is labeled as such has the “beanface” look to it: It’s very low effort, cookie cutter, assembly line animation. series that use it also tend to have similar elements such as “off-the-street” sounding VAs, stilted dialogue, and other tropes about it that lend it to the CalArts meme.
 
I’m aware that Lauren Faust attended that school, but California Institure of the Arts back in the 90’s is not the same as it has been for the past ten years which has been pumping out same-face artists that made the majority of cartoons that have released since 2008~2010. We’re currently in a new era of animation dark ages in the West.

People are lazy. So when they want to describe the ubiquitous art style that has spread across the industry they can either say “That simplistic style with the oblong oval smiles that you see all over the place” or “CalArts style” they’re going to go with “CalArts style”. It doesn’t matter who coined it, it stuck and it’s not going to change if all you do is say “All CalArts isn’t like that and it was coined by a predator!” Want to change it? Come up with a snappier title.

Blame the folks who try to bring it in a genuinely negative light. They’re the ones who makes the (relatively) saner part of the fandom go mad.

Just a counter-reminder that “cal arts style” become such a meme because it gets under the skin of terrible, uncreative, trend-chasing animators and their fanboys.

Just a reminder that Calarts style was coined by actual predator John K and refered to animation from the late 90-early 2000’s that supposedly aped Disney’s style.

Nice fix! This is how G4.5 should look. Still chibi, but their faces actually fit on their faces.

I just came here to remember Lauren Faust attended Calarts and many cartoons made by students from there were very successful.
