I think it was only particularly common in the early 2010s, when this came out, up to the #MeToo movement. When I was in law school it was kind of trendy to favor it, if no other reason but to overcorrect.
And of course, “he” was far more common for the gender neutral for far longer than “she” ever was. Point is I’m not sure if its popularity has actually been around for decades.
I think today though people are more willing to accept the singular “they” with trans issues becoming a social issue du jour, and disfavor both “he” and “she” because of evolving concepts of gender.
But I think we all know Hasbro still largely regarded the audience to be little girls.

It is; the Viewing Guide gave individual names to both parts (probably something about making them easier for parents to distinguish, I’d guess). Part 2 got called “Elements of Harmony”.

There was a title change at some point. Originally the first two episodes were called ‘Friendship is Magic, Part 1’ and ‘Part 2’.
These were changed to ‘The Mare in the Moon’ and ‘The Elements of Harmony’ respectively.
