@Keith Mowz
Actully weight isn’t a function of mass, it’s the effect of gravity on the mass.
And as we can’t weight the sun and the moon with how things are, we would need both effected by somthing with with a greater gravitational pull then the sun for that, there is my statement “greater mass implies a greater weight”.
After all if in the vacuum of space where there is no gravity, a baseball and a bowling ball have no weight at all.
@Prof.NightJack
The sun both weighs more AND is more massive because weight is a function of mass. The only thing the moon has going for it is that rock is denser than gas.
@Mugen Kagemaru
I think what dt was getting at(in a duckish manner) was about how the sun has more mass. greater mass implies a greater weight.
There is also the fact that the gravitational pull from the sun on a planet is greater then that pull from a planet to a moon.
So you are actully technically wrong about the moon weighing more from being make of rock.
acclerating the planet spin would use less energy then trying to acclerate a object in an orbit severl hundredthousend km away, depending of the size and mass, well actually only the mass
@Barhandar
Doesn’t seem as parsimonious (i.e. a bit needlessly complicated), but still an acceptable string theory. Keep in mind, not that you mentioned it, but I just wanted to bring up that in a physical system, there would be no discernible difference between a system wherein the Sun and Moon orbit around the Earth and a system wherein the Earth rotates in between a stationary Sun and Moon. It’s just a matter of frame of reference, nothing at all to do with whether the Princess “really” have the power they claim to have. Personally I err on the side of their benevolence. But again, that’s just something I’ve had a gripe about.
Anyways, I enjoy your explanation of a technological Equestria, although I disagree with it on its premise.
@Homfrog
Technological Equestria version: Moon is a space dock and Sun is a combination energy provider/defense station, and their orbits are destabilized. Sisters’s magic does dual job of restabilization/offsetting whatever destabilizes it so they don’t, say, fall on the planet, and general control - which is how they move them, and automation is not present or offline (might even be shut down by ponies themselves, what with their “control the weather, control the climate” attitude).
No Sisters’ magic means issues, because unicorns have magic, pegasi have an idea of what to do with the celestial bodies so they work right, and earth ponies have durability - but only alicorns have all three.
Presumably, without governing control (like Discord’s or Twilight’s), they default to both being visible in the sky. Additional headcanon: visible in the sky from any point on the planet (barring landscape obstructions), because gravimagical shenanigans make entire planet have same time of day and “year”, with only difference being relative position on the sky (North and South have them on the horizon, while equator has them straight above).
it’s pretty clear that under normal circumstances, the sun and moon of equestria are diametrically opposed. and if they’re orbiting like this, it seems reasonable to me that they would be of the same mass and orbit at the same altitude. ignoring the issue, then, that their moon still has phases, they shouldn’t even need to move the sun and moon anyway. an orbiting body continues to orbit unless experiencing drag. maybe like some kind of magical field puts drag on them?
Correct, and magic is part of science (look at Twilight).
To Celestia, Twilight and Luna it’s more like turning a light on and off than it is a massive gravitational feat performed at high velocity, perhaps difficult but not totally draining.
Perhaps Equestria’s moon is a lot smaller and closer than ours. In fact both might be satellites and could be either artificial, natural or magical.
Apparently whatever the sun and moon are it’s harder to have them raise and lower sedately than it is to just get them to move. Perhaps they are in fixed tracks and the magic sets them to a particular setting like a stereo with lots of discrete settings.
Also note that Twilight and Discord can both do ‘gravity’ magic, as can Luna and Tia, so apparently it’s pretty common and easy to do. Most unicorns can pick things up and move them easily.

As I said… my accent. The pronouncing was somewhat mixed with how I would pronounce it in Swedish. And if I would pronounce it in Swedish… it would not rhyme.
ended the 666-vote difference whoo-hoo ^ 3 ^

That is if that was what you meant.

What is there to imply?
… Are you implying that the moon is heavier than the sun?

I don’t, and I’m swedish. But we all talk rather different from one aonther.
Word rhymes with herd when I say.

And nopony is having so much fun
Im celestialecious 😋
@Fuzzyhead12
… do you guys pronounce it like “warred” or something?
As I said… my accent. The pronouncing was somewhat mixed with how I would pronounce it in Swedish. And if I would pronounce it in Swedish… it would not rhyme.
On the East Coast, it’s a full rhyme. XD
its a halfrhyme but still working
Huh? Sorry, but in what universe does ‘word’ not rhyme with ‘herd’?
That last one… didn’t work that well in my head with my accent =|
I enjoy writing poems fast.
I don’t expect this trend to last.
I thank you, though, for your kind word:
We stick together in this herd.
