I’m hoping this thread remains a mature, on-topic discussion about downvotes and not just random arguing.
 
That being said, I’m gonna be pretty light on moderating this thread, since everyone’s opinions are valid here as well.

So I wonder how many uses “complex algorithms” on their filters in order to avoid certain posts

I don’t feel mass downvoting should be instantly bannable as there is the chance of people not knowing any better.
 
Tho I realize the chances of that happening are very low and most people that do it know what they are doing.

I don’t understand what purpose downvotes actually serve. Why not just let people upvote what they like, and why are some folks so obsessed with their capability to be negative towards someone on the internet? It’s like people have lost their heads because they feel like they can’t voice their angry internet disapproval anymore.

Not instantly, but if they have a habit of doing it after one or two warnings, they should definitely be banned.

Something like e621’s system for comments might work. They only allow 10 votes per day. Maybe restricting the number of downvotes you can give in a day is a good compromise?

That wouldn’t be a good idea, as a person could simply just jump over to another account to bypass that. Plus, it would be a pain toward those who aren’t abusing the votes.

I fully understand the issue with downvotes but they’re pretty well essential for the scoring system to work at all.
 
If I may demonstrate with an example, let’s say there are three images:  
Image A has 40 upvotes and 2 downvotes  
Image B has 40 upvotes and 20 downvotes  
Image C has 40 upvotes and 200 downvotes
 
Now, without downvotes all three of these would have the same score, but each one has a VASTLY different reception, the upvotes alone don’t give the full picture.
 
Hell, controversy could get a picture more exposure and more votes in general, let’s say image X has 400 upvotes and 2 downvotes but image Y has 440 upvotes and 2000 downvotes. Image Y would have a HIGHER score even though it has a worse reception overall by virtue of just getting more attention.
 
Apologies if I waffled on too much about this, I just really wanted to make this point clear, particularly since it seems like someone wanted to make this point earlier and didn’t really get it across.

Someone going through a single tag they may not like and downvoting every single image.

When someone, or a brigade of people, downvotes a picture or several in large amount within a short amount of time.

It take take a few forms:  
Downvoting every image that falls under a specific tag. Not because you dislike the image itself, but just because it has that tag.
 
Downvoting every image you happen to see on the front page at the time.
 
Creating multiple accounts to upvote/downvote the same images repeatedly.

So we can express our disapproval. It’s just as legitimate as expressing approval. I’m pretty damn certain I’ve handed out more ups than downs. I’m willing to bet the majority of users are similar to me.
 
Don’t focus on us normal folk, focus on the asshole abusers ruining the fun for everyone else.
