It will do a number of things throughout the site, namely:

Try the /tags/safe.json instead of a search on this one! It has an extra tag object in the beginning, which in turn has an images field which will give you the number you’re looking for.  
WARNING: this count can be off sometimes. On some tags it even goes into the negative sometimes.
 
I don’t think search gives this number (yet?) because it will probably break existing applications that use the API.
 
No idea what’s going on with the nofav/nocomments parameters, but I know that we’re working on switching those around for explicit fav/comments parameters and not giving them otherwise.

spoiler: tags are special in the sense that they don’t get auto-deleted. The reason for this is that people add them way in advance to their filters, and we had some problems with users getting spoiled because they randomly dropped out of their filters in the past. Afaik no tag gets deleted if anyone on the site is filtering it; spoilers never get deleted (hence, typos exist). We’re working on having the manual “just destroy this tag from everywhere” button for admins actually do something again though.
 
Also, be aware that if a tag shows up with a 0-count in tag search, it could also be an alias for another tag.

Yes. If people search for either name, they will find the pictures. In the taglist on the pictures (with the green tags and purple artist tags etc) only one will show up though, and it’s up to you to choose which one.  
For example, see what happens if you go to the artist:pumkinpie16 tag and what other aliases it has, but notice that you can also still find them if you search with the other name

I don’t know much about the humanization tags really, but yeah, last I checked, it’s for humanizations featuring non-human ears (usually pony).

I can’t find the thread atm, but I’m sure this question has come up earlier somewhere, and I tried some things back then but found it was actually impossible.  
What I presume is happening is people thinking that the , (or AND, or &&) does some kind of set intersection operation, where the different search terms are different sets. The problem here is that before the actual search, the query is expanded to what you wrote, which is substantially different (but as far as I know, more efficient).

Known bug (or at least, I’m pretty sure what caused it). My guess is that at some point either some idiot added the tag to a whole lot of unrelated pics, or it was a tag alias accident. Either way, whether the unfair tag additions were deleted with some mod tools, or whatever was unaliased, it doesn’t trigger some required indexupdate.
 
In fact, if you click Edit Tags or Source on any of the wrong pics, it will probably still show the idiot sentry tag in the edit box. Remove the bad tag from there, hit Save Tags and Source, and they will be fixed.
 
I’m betting though that it was accidentally aliased to exploitable meme (instead of having it implied) when then fucked up the index. We should probably just have Clover reindex all images that show up if you search for exploitable meme, I think that should fix this and also some other problems with said tag.

Well duh. You’re searching for aliased tag, -aliased tag essentially. It’d be the same as searching for ts, -twilight sparkle and actually expecting images to show up.

OK, it looks like on March 31, a user went and added oc:lilith to pretty much all the images it is tagged with now. I’m also fairly sure that I did velvet -> oc:velvet before that, what with it having an alias and all. How recent is that tumblr pic? And why does the OC have an aka? Idunno either, really.

Okay I had quite a look through the tag changes on those, and what images they’re on. I have to ask: is there any, any reason at all, why we shouldn’t just alias

For one, there’s literally hundreds of pics out there tagged just ‘anus’ that look exactly the same as the ones under the other tags? And two, the other tags appear to be tagged by very few users (like, over 90% of them was added by maybe a handful of users), while everyone just uses anus?  
I haven’t done anything (yet) but unless there’s some really good reason these two have to exist I see no point in them having to exist.

Nah, don’t add it to everything. I looked a bit at the tag changes, and it’s really just one guy deciding that RD should have it even for tiny breasts, oh, and also remove it on other characters because he feels like it.
 
on a side note: he’s also the one that removes rarijack from a lot of pics that are actually shipping

Yeah this is one of those things where having Tag Changes per tag visible to everyone would be really useful. Admins have this functionality already, but it’s slow, includes tag changes on merged images, and doesn’t filter anything. Well, things will still get spoilered at least, but apart from that I’m really not sure if the site will hold up when thousands and thousands of users get this.

Actually, since we can now actually distinguish between the oc and, well, literal tickets (like for the gala or whatever) the idea was to do write some retag tool that would allow admins to mass-retag everything ticket to oc:ticket, and also update people’s filters and watchlists, and then just go through the tag and tag back actual tickets.
 
the problem is that said thing hasn’t been done yet, and it’s kinda pointless to make an alias for this

And I can understand the point about “why not bg pony: as well?” Or, like, episode:  
How I understood and interpreted the OP was that there were tags (lamia for example) which had multiple meanings. Some OC’s got a (oc) suffix, others didn’t (zephyr for example), so that already was a bit inconsistent if you ask me.
 
Another thing I mentioned was that some of these names really look a lot like canon characters. I have looked at taglists more than once thinking “I didn’t knew we had a canon character called <somename>?” only to find out afterwards that it was an OC. This was also why I kinda wanted it to just apply to all OC’s.
 
I also went about that there are pretty much an infinite number of OC names (like artist names), but only a limited number of canon characters, episodes, etc. When we eventually do get tag categories, we think that will all play out nicely.

which would explain a lot. too bad the connection isn’t trusted if you change that to https. which is funny since I think the flash itself is from a https thing again. It seems to be just a generic lightIRC flash anyway at first glance, we could potentially just host it (=the flash) ourself, and get rid of the ugly frame in the process as well?

Dunno. I’m not sure when implications became a thing, but I think it was before I even joined, and definitely way before I started doing any sort of modding/coding.
 
Regardless of that, we’re talking about a really big tag here. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were merged for the same reason screenshot is aliased to screencap even though you’d think one should be used for show things and the other for other things: some people call a shot from the show a screencap, others a screenshot, etc. (just what I think, I didn’t put those aliases there and don’t know who did, so this is all just speculating. It happened though, that’s what important here)
 
And I think I’ve seen a photo frame tag a few times (though that wouldn’t apply to things such as >>554900

Nah, I can understand upvotes galore and am not going to get rid of that, or at least, not until we have some functionality like you mentioned. But really, nobody is ever going to care about 1000 upvotes, king of upvotes, the thirteen most civiled upvoted or downvoted images in derpibooru etc.
 
Now back on topic, I didn’t get to doing the aliases last weekend, but should be able to look at them later today.

Now hang on here for a sec. I don’t think (or at least, it wasn’t my intention to be interpreted like that) I ever said that I was supporting or opposing these humanized OC’s; I seldomly get one in my archiver, nor do I really read comments on them because, as I already said, I just have little interest in humanizations as a whole.
 
I thought I’d be nice and put some of my own personal opinion in this thread (although I agree on that I could have been clearer about it being my opinion and not some mod stance), and my opinion was formed on the few humanized OC pics I have seen. Sure, I haven’t seen many of them (how many of these are there anyway?), but I do think my reply was more valuable than just a “meh, I don’t care”
 
In hindsight, I probably should have added that one line I pondered about with the first reply, namely mentioning the diamond dog anthro OC’s from a while back (although it’s still comparing apples with oranges).
 
What I meant was that as long the people that like them like them, the people that don’t just ignore them (like they should), and we’re only talking about a couple of pics, then I don’t think it’s worth making much of a fuss about.

Yeah I’ll have a talk with the other mods about that. Like, we’d have to start thinking about other ones like weapons-grade adorable, insulin required and perhaps even lifeloser wins (though that last one is artist-bound so it won’t cause a fuckton of other tags to also be on an image) as well. The difference between this and the people overtagging things e621-style is the latter has some use, while this just… it doesn’t have any)
 
Also removing a tag from all the pics I think currently destroys it, and I’m not sure if Tag Changes will then still show which tag was actually removed by a mod, thus it gets readded, etc etc.
 
Anyway, let’s take further discussion on this to another thread (or make a new one) and keep this one focused on aliases.

Or, we can just get rid of the pointless tags (kwark strikes again, the duck goes kwark, etc) because they don’t add anything. It just clutters the tag list from finding the actually ‘useful’* tags like drama, downvotes galore, etc. People need to stop making these utterly useless tags.
 

Is there any particular difference between the following tags:  
photo (over 20k)  
irl (over 4k)  
real life (~800)
 
I’m not touching any of them before getting some more info, since some of them imply others, etc. Okay let’s see what we have (arrows mean that a tag implies another tag):  

 
Note that implications are not transitional, that is, if A implies B, and B implies C, then unless there is also a direct arrow from A to C, then A does not imply C (thus, tagging human nudity doesn’t automatically add irl as well)
 
Not shown is that irl human also implies human (which it should) and also, irl human is a very useful tag for filtering. It’s also a big tag with some 13k pics.
