Could you please make it site policy to either include the name of the DNP artist when removing images, or leave the tags visible. It would make it much easier to track down other similar images which are also be unavailable on derpibooru when all you have to go on is a link to a deleted image.

In this case I’m looking for the artist of >>336069 (deleted) [NSFW], but even with a copy of the image saved on my computer I’m having no luck finding out who drew it or where their other images are hosted.

@Vree
Derpibooru already has a reverse image search built in. The script could check that before uploading anything, and prompt the user if there’s any doubt about what it should do. It wouldn’t be perfect, but the time saved when it worked would certainly outweigh the time lost on the occasions when it screwed something up.
I can make it happen, and probably will, but I can’t do it immediately because I’m going to be pretty busy over the next few days. Once that work is out of the way, I might have a shot at coding something for you to try out.

Hmmm.. Sounds interesting.

Well if you can make it happen, and WOULD make it happen I’ll definitely take it for a test ride. :D Can’t remain stuck in the last decade forever.

I’m not sure if delayed uploading would work though. The risk of dupes - because people DO seem to check the image source & upload too) is great when we’re talking about say two hours for a dozen images.

Fast automated uploads are probably a bad idea, but the script could easily be programmed to wait 10 minutes between uploading each image. Just leave it running in the background.

These days there’s no reason for someone to have to sit at a computer and manually copy large archives of images from one site to another.

Mass uploads
You could always just upload only a few every day, instead of everything at once. Makes people appreciate the pics more.
But there is so much to upload. So. Much. :(
If I only limit myself one or two each day we’ll never get it done.
(You think I’ll remember to keep going back to the same artist? With each passing day I find yet another artist I like.)

Why is the default front page so small anyway? :p People should’ve set theirs to like 50 pics per page, like mine.

But anyway that’s actually what I was saying to GentleBP: if people find it difficult to deal with many pics on the front page at once even now, then fast automated uploads are probably not needed.

I still want the mass image check function tho please. :D

“ask” is becoming the universal tag for Tumblr ask blogs. It auto-tags “tumblr” now which is great help.
I might have entirely put that implication on there.

@Vree
The tricky ones are those ask blogs that spread each entry accross multiple image files. That means I have to make a collage first, which is time consuming.
Use ImageMagick (assuming only static pictures) :
$ convert tumblr*.png -append -gravity center collage.png
done. optionally add a -background {color} if you want something other than transparency.

@Background Pony
You know, it would be nice to have some sort of “deep mining” tool. What I mean is that something I often do is pick an artist on DB and go through their DA/tumblr to see if any pieces were missed.* If someone is madmax or johnjoseco though then this’d quickly become a nightmare. For any popular artist with 100+ pics who has most of their stuff already here, I just have to assume they have the rest here too.

I imagine this would be too complex a task to ask for though, needing image recognition software and whatnot…

*I do not neccessarily go for the 100%, sometimes there are pics I decide I don’t mind being swallowed by the Internet.
  • very rough sketches and early/old art
  • OC/personal pics (this is a DB tradition that is a mix of courtesy and lack of OC interest; very well designed OCs are an exception)
  • something that would be inflammatory, eg. Derpygate pics (I prefer to only hold and eventually upload these, perhaps slip them into the middle of a mass upload where they are less likely to be noticed)
  • personal distaste (rare, but I may ignore extreme

    Mass uploads I actually don’t find that difficult to do manually. Thanks to the DB tagging system I can carry over or adjust tags very fast.
    And I wonder if the mods/users mind that I strain the server/dominate the front page as it is.
    (It seems that most users have their images per page set to low, because uploading even just 10 or so images at once tends to get me complaints.)

    The tricky ones are those ask blogs that spread each entry accross multiple image files. That means I have to make a collage first, which is time consuming. I also try to be “respectful” towards the artist by keeping the resolution, size etc. as close to the original as possible, but when you have several pics of different sizes that make up a tumblr post, sometimes you have to tinker a bit. I’m yet to come up with the perfect solution for this.
    (If you know of a software that stitches images together by their edges quick, causes minimal resolution/color loss, especially if it can support animated pics too, I’d hear it. :) )

    Tagging: I guess automation could help a bit here, if, for example, I wanted to do that last thing and put the “ask” tag on all the blogs. I could just say ‘put the “ask” tag on every image tagged “ask-the-crusaders”’, I bet that could save some work. It depends on whether we think that these undertakings are worth the effort and time.

uploads & reorganizing general: want to have an Ask blog uploaded but don’t have the time to do it alone? do you want help to check if every Johnjoseco image is uploaded or any were missed? need to retag 1,000 images because of a policy change? launching any such initiative would go from here. You could also check if there is anyone else is already working on the same thing you are.
If there was sufficient demand, I or someone else could write a piece of software to do such operations automatically using the API. Certainly automated retagging would be easy, and bulk uploading from tumblr or DA shouldn’t be too much harder. Of course, automated tagging during bulk uploading would be a bit harder, but you could just set a default set of tags for the entire upload and then sort out the details later.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

I wouldn’t mind having a “Workshop” sub-forum specifically discussions about upload and tag discussion between users. “Site And Policy” seems less casual and more focused on mod-user conversation to be suited for this purpose There are a number of topics I wouldn’t mind being able to keep on the table all the time:

  • tag thread: somewhere where you can ask/discuss what a certain tag includes/covers, plan new ones, or launch big re-tag initiatives.

  • translations: having users who speak languages hang around a thread is useful. A typical problem for example is romanizing Pixiv artists’ names; keeping a list of the Japanese name-romanized name pairs and having a Japanese person occassionally advise when we create new ones could be a ton of help.
    There are some other language-related questions that could come up.

  • uploads & reorganizing general: want to have an Ask blog uploaded but don’t have the time to do it alone? do you want help to check if every Johnjoseco image is uploaded or any were missed? need to retag 1,000 images because of a policy change? launching any such initiative would go from here. You could also check if there is anyone else is already working on the same thing you are.

    Every day I come accross questions that I do not know where to state to the DB community so I wouldn’t mind a place for them.

    Here are also a bunch of sample questions for a start that could go into these threads.
  • DA is full of images that are “based”, ie. they were redrawn from another artist’s piece, but this is admitted and the artist adds enough of their own (colors, detail, redrawn parts) that it goes beyond simple tracing. We have a tag for “vector”s, but we do not have any way to tag these other type of images. Should a tag like “based” or similar exist?
  • Checking the uploads of Stun-99 I notice that many of his romanized names have an underscore _ in them - someone who knows Japanese could perhaps check or explain the reason? eg. he translates artist:しし君と般若 as artist:pash_hn but I also see the same artist tagged as artist:shishikuntohannya.
  • “ask” is becoming the universal tag for Tumblr ask blogs. It auto-tags “tumblr” now which is great help. That means Tumblr comment reposts need to use “tumblr,-ask” though, is that fine? (yes) Should we launch an initiative to retag all the ask blog images that do not have this tag? (no)

    I do not intend the threads to actually decide anything; users should work when they fell like it, should be able to make up tags ona whim etc. Mostly I’d just apprecaite sometimes a place to discuss my thoughts or doubts or whatever I’m doing at that moment, without affecting the image comment section.

Tag implications need the whole chain of implications to be put in manually. The fact that I can’t easily (or anything within several miles of that) see what the hell those are (as well as other things) is one of the main reasons I kind of stopped touching tag anythings until sorted.
Also Vargus, stop requesting the same thing as BP. Bigger avatars isn’t going to happen.

How did you know that I was one of the BP’s??

I notice that Tag Implications seem to only go 1 level deep. For example, scratchtavia will imply octavia and vinyl scratch, but not octavia melody or dj-pon3. Boob pun tags will imply breasts, but not nudity. I don’t think it’s a problem, just not sure if it’s intended behavior.

How about this:

  1. some tweaks to apng support
  2. different colors for different boards
  3. The ability to upload slightly larger size files(100-200 px larger) as your avatar.

I would recommend removing target=”_blank” from the source link on images.

While opening a normal link in a new tab/window is trivial with at most a couple of clicks, I do not know of any way to open a target=”_blank” link in the same tab without manually copying and pasting the link into the address bar. It seems like a poor design decision to take that choice away from the user.
