I’m really not sure how I feel about one of the options in one of them just literally being what they basically already called. Like, I want a name for that character, not just that they are somepony’s mum.

Sphinx is winning for ONE reason alone.  
There are people who don’t want a name change and people who do.  
People who don’t want a name change will vote for Sphinx ’character’  
People who do want a name change will be forced to spread their focus across 15 new options.  
They will have to compete against conflicting ideas and other suggestions.  
There will never be a unanimous agreement of any of the new names.  
Therefor, there is no way a new name will win.  
There needed to be a pole before the name pole that asked people if the sphinx should be renamed at all (yes) or (no)

It seems people don’t want the Sphinx to be named for some reason…

I don’t know if it’s really random. Isis is the goddess of magic and wisdom and the most powerful deity in the Egyptian pantheon with power over everything.

I agree words only have the meanings we give them and don’t have any inherent power unless we give them power. But here’s the thing. We can’t count on everybody just dropping the negative meaning of a word. Even if everyone here agreed to embrace the old meaning of Isis (IE the god Isis) we’d still look fucking bonkers to everybody outside our circle.  
To put it bluntly this isn’t a free speech issue, it’s you trying to give muh waifu a shit name. Please stop.
 
I actually already knew who Isis was. I’m not ruining the meaning of the name isis, the people out there blowing themselves up in the name of hatred are.

It’s not like Isis even had a chance to win this, or it’s even a good name for the Sphinx. Bastet and Sekhmet at least were cat themed goddesses, Isis is totally random.

I think we’ve gone far enough with this argument. If you really don’t like the name Isis, you can vote for something else in the poll.

Because humans are idiots. They rather keep seeing the Swastika as the symbol of all evil, and empower the message Nazis sent even more that way, than ignoring everything the Nazis ever said about it and used it for, judging it by its original meaning and promoting it in the context of that original meaning.  
Demonizing the symbol further only ruins something historically innocent and positive and gives Nazi ideology more power than it already has, while promoting the symbol in its original context and bringing that context back into the consciousness of people would take the power Nazis have over this symbol away.

It’s not the terror organization ISIS that ruins the name, it’s people like you who ruin it by judging it based on false merit and a wrong meaning. You should google “The egyptian goddess Isis” and improve your historic knowledge.

In all seriousness though there were some actually great choices for the Sphinx but it’s sad that some of them aren’t getting as much traction because people seem to be having a knee-jerk reaction to anything Egyptian related. I mean I do get it - a lot of these suggestions /probably did/ get to the poll because someone literally googled “ancient egypt” for like a minute, but still some of the names seemed more creative than people give credit for. I’ll actually be disappointed to see this character go ironically unnamed.

Yup which is why Swastika isn’t a name suggestion on the sphinx pole.  
We’re all quite aware of the unfortunate reality that the name Isis has been ruined forever. And since its been ruined it’s a terrible name suggestion with a bazaar amount of votes.

They’re not the first to do it either. The Swastika was considered a symbol of prosperity and good luck until the Nazis used it and now the Western world still sees it as a symbol of hatred.

For goodness sake, Isis is a name of a rather benevolent Egyptian goddess or Black Adam’s love. And some group tarnished her name, so now anything that has or is abbreviated to her name is either changed or is subjected to Illuminati confirmed memes.
