That said, I worry that EQA could be just looked over and ignored, even if it is, in fact, decent. Spin offs can make or break a franchise from spreading outwards into more cultural recognition and I worry what would happen if they took it as a sign that nobody really wants any more.

There’s something comforting about drama about the franchise actually being about the show rather than a spinoff.

She’s only poorly written if you expect more from her and the show itself. If all you expect is she’s a moral guide for an episodic status quo show then she’s perfect.

Celestia is not poorly written.

Like almost everything in MLP:FiM, Celestia has great potential… They just won’t use it.

Celestia is kind of in this weird position where she’d be a really interestingly flawed character if she was written how she is on purpose. Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time has had similar accusation thrown at her, but in her case she’s intentionally written as morally ambiguous. With Celestia, it seems like they created a psychologically complex, tragically flawed character on accident.

Celestia is not evil or any of that stupid Tryantlestia crap.

Yeah, the UCWU doesn’t seem to get that Twilight’s new castle was a result of a magical phenomenon and claim it was done by scab laborers with fake crystal. I figured we’d better try to calm them down by accepting their offer for a new town hall.

Alright well that’s one “neigh,” keep in mind that Ponyville pledged 300,000 bits of aid to the Crystal Empire last fiscal year, and that they are not only offering us the material at a steep discount but also pledge to cut their aid package by 50% within the same time frame?
 
I’ve also got the United Crystal Workers Union on my ass, and Las Pegasus was the only other town who would take any of their crystal.

My take on Tirek is that he was basically Sombra done right. Sure, his motivation was bare bones power hunger, but he was visually impressive, demonstrably powerful and competent, and had a great deal of presence to his performance.

I don’t think there are any MLP villains who are like that. You know they can be turned into friends in a jiffy. Even Sombra is a total bro in another universe (which is more than we’ve ever gotten from any other universe)

Right, so this plan to increase imports of crystal block to Ponyville over the next three years, if I could just get a vote on this…

Lord Tirek isn’t a great villain. He’s not a BAD one by any stretch of the term but he just seems a bit… eh. A good villain is one that the audience can look at and say “Yes, I’ll remember him with the grandest of fear” or “This guy is crazy, but he made me think about my ideals and philosophy” or even “Aw… Th-that’s awful… no wonder he turned bad.”
 
Tirek is none of those.
