hahahahaha- No, sorry, that’s not how it works; you can take your own ball and go home if you want, but “GO AWAY AND STOP DISAGREEING WITH ME” is not the same thing as a coherent argument. You’re the one claiming self-evident status while you present your personal opinion as if it were uncontestable fact; it’s on you to explain that. Enough people– enthusiastically, even– liked EqG that you can’t really make unqualified blanket statements like “IT’S CRRRAP!” without sounding silly, any more than they could say “IT’S PERFECT AND FLAWLESS!”.
 
Celestia is trying to rush Twilight’s growth  
I’ve felt the same thing pretty much since the beginning; the show doesn’t look like it’s ever going to elaborate on that, but the only reason that makes any sense is that Celestia is somehow aware of an imminent Big Bad that she and Luna aren’t going to be able to defeat– or that she’s foreseen they won’t survive– and she’s quickstepping her replacement instead of letting Twilight’s ascension happen organically.

The only bad/unfunny part of Spike’s performance of the Cloudsdale anthem was that stupid stock baby crying sound effect at the end, I hate when cartoons use it.

I sometimes put slices of ham in my oatmeal-with-brown-sugar. It’s pretty good (but it can’t be too salty, otherwise the flavor of the ham overpowers everything else)

There’s a limit. They know when they’re being patronized and can only take so much crap, but at the same time you really don’t have to think about certain things when you’re writing for them. That’s less because they’re stupid and more because they lack the life experience to understand, though.
 
Again, I’d argue that at least with FiM, the people behind it genuinely take care and take pride in their work. Their ultimate goal that they have is to make something of quality that kids enjoy. But they also have to satisfy themselves.

Precisely. Children are like clay: They’re extremely susceptible to molding by outside influence, and will easily shovel down poorly written, cheaply made garbage. However, they’re also capable of metabolizing good material when they’re given it, so it really comes down to who’s making it, since we all know parents can’t be assed to make sure their children are watching anything good.

I still think the increase in intelligent content for kids comes from adult content creators having a sense of self-respect in their work, and pride that makes them want to put their name on it.
 
They don’t have to try very hard. Advertising can spin anything to get people to buy it, especially kids. The reason that they try hard is because they want to.

True, a show that genuinely wants to give children intelligent content also needs enough “surface appeal” to keep them interested when the higher concepts fly over their heads. But then, as they age, they’ll be able to look back and better conceptualize these ideas they were being shown at a young age, and they’ll grow to appreciate it. The alternative is to just shovel shit on them, and as they grow their tastes will remain shit, and they’ll just grow up to be shit in general.

Kids are not that dumb, but also not that smart. They will just throw away the meat instead of trying to digest it.
 
Unless you get rid of all the oatmeal, and teach them to love meat. As in, makes all cartoons good again.

You’ll never be able to digest meat if you’re never given anything but oatmeal.

The setting, beyond Ponyville is about as shallow as the Flash graphics that they are made of. Very few things get names, like the rivers or the hills, or even the valley that they are in, it’s exactly like the background characters; If a setting or character is needed, it will be made from scratch then be gone. The things that intrigue you in the background may just stay there.
 
This is where the comics come in.

That’s a can of worms I don’t think kids can digest. Not that it’s “too dark”, but stuff like racial conflicts is not something that will appeal to the target demographic.

The setting has a lot of potential, but I agree with you that it’s scrambled and unfocused, largely because the majority of the show is slice of life, that just throws in poorly thought out magical shit in as plot devices without actually thinking about the larger implications of things.
 
Between the environmental control, the disconnect between the sugar sweet pony communities and the dangerous monster filled hells, the three way racial division, the implied division between ponies and the world’s other sentients, and the implications of Celestia and the theocracy she leads, there is potential for some really good fantasy here.

EqG was goddamn terrible and the characters were a big part of why. They felt like shallow card board versions of themselves.
 
I didn’t say that setting does not matter. I said that it is a secondary concern for me. I fucking despise highschool settings, but good characters can help get past that. I like Dariah, Mean Girls and Buffy the Vampire Slayer because of the characters and in spite of the setting.
 
Similarly if the character’s of FiM were as they were in EqG then I’d never have gotten into the fandom because there would be nothing for me to latch onto.

Hey, I could be on board with a balance of both worlds, I just don’t have any faith in the writer’s juggling abilities unfortunately. If they want to emphasize lighthearted fun and interpersonal relationships, then I’m more than happy to consume it. If they want to throw in some darkness and adventure, I’d say do it with baby steps, but then again, subtlety is not a staple of cartoon writers.

However, I would like to qualify what I meant about when I say “adventure episode.” To me, an adventure episode is really any episode where the fact that Equestria is a magical world, and something fantastic affects the plot. In hindsight, perhaps adventure isn’t the right word. Bats! could have been a really good example of what I’m talking about, if it actually focused on a magical scourge of animals, wasn’t so blisteringly in favor of Fluttershy’s moronic argument, and didn’t drop everything to shove !Gimmickbat in our faces.
