I’ve been able to play steam games on it without much problem over the last half-year that I’ve owned it, actually; this problem I’m talking about has only been happening in recent day, and I’ve actually stopped doing alotta things because of it. I could just be trying to read something on the internet while listening to something on youtube and it would suddenly shut off without warning.

*Looks at the PC on HP*
Yeah, you aren’t gonna be able to replace anything in that except for the RAM and HDD.
Best thing I could tell you is to call HP or take to a shop or something. If it were a custom-built, than I could definitely help you.
You aren’t trying to game on it, are you?

@Mike

Well no, I had no hand in putting it together other than upgrading the ram; it’s actually HP Sprout, which is one of their all-in-one models. I was just guessing that cooling systems for towers or laptops wouldn’t necessarily be compatible with all-in-ones, plus this is a highly specialized model. Also, for whatever reason, the model seems to get hottest in the first “quadrant” of the back panel behind the screen, and that fan seems to be the most active, as if that’s the only portion that actually needs cooling.

I’d recommend getting a better cooler for it. Preferably an aftermarkte heatsink. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is one of the best air coolers.
Is it a custom-built rig?

Recently has been shutting off without warning, as if somebody pulled the plug or something. I think it might be because it’s overheating, but I’m not actually sure. What sort of fan would be compatible with an all-in-one, and what should I do if cooling my pc doesn’t help?

My GPU (GTX 970) seems to have locked its core speed at 405mhz and won’t go any higher. As you can guess, games run terrible at this clock speed.

I searched google and there are plenty of people with this problem but no clear answer or solution. It seems to be an nvidia issue not limited to any series of cards or architecture.

Anyone had this problem and solved?

As a former owner of one, yes. That card is sufficient.
Dependent on game, obviously, but it should work for most recording/gaming.

Crucial and intel are good brands.
Also you want to install the OS on it. 250 GB or so should be good enough. Depends on your budget.

To add to what everyone else said, get yourself an SSD. Not too big, but enough to transfer data fast for rendering and stuff.

For video recording you want a graphics card greater than a GTX 660 on the nvidia side or for AMD 250x or greater as these two use low impact recording and lower frame rates only by 1 or 2 frames.

They both provide options for resolution and frame rate and can run in the background. I use these and have them set to capture the last minute of stuff. if something cool happens in a game I can save that moment. They can even be set in a manual record option which will record everything until you tell it to stop.

These options can be pretty heavy on space as gameplay in 1080p 60fps takes about 300+ megs for every minute of recording.

You want more than 1TB if you plan on going for long recording sessions and don’t want to delete stuff.

Set yourself a budget, then use the Ars Technica PC builders’ guide as a base for what you want to get.

The most important component in my opinion is the Motherboard/Mainboard (MB), as that will dictate how long your computer will last in terms of upgradability and functionality. I’d personally suggest a MB with M.2 storage support and USB 3.1/Type-c/Thunderbolt 3 support if you can afford it, as I feel that peripherals will move in the direction of USB Type-c adoption for their adapters, thus it would be good to invest in supporting it now rather than later.
