The room beyond the small, utilitarian window was for all intents and purposes an attic: Mostly empty, walls lined with a few boxes and furniture covered in dusty sheets, only entrance/exit being a single trapdoor on the floor.

“It’s not all bad.” he says as he enters the store. While many shoppers do pause in their business at the sound of his approach, many at least smile and wave back before resuming their browsing of shelves. Steve can even make out a few friendly-sounding voices making comments to the effect of “Oh hey, it’s the hat guy again!”, “See, I told you he’d be back.”, “Now there’s a face I haven’t seen in a while.”, “Is it Thursday already?” etc.

“Not the warmest of welcomes, I know. Folks around here are still hesitant to trust a strange wizard that willingly lives in a ruin in the Everfree Forest. Though I suppose the fact I only ever come here to grocery shop, hunt monsters, and/or clean up after a magic accident doesn’t help much either.” They reach the store entrance, and Cobalt opens the door with his magic. “Come on in, I guess.”

The roof of Cobalt’s tower was angled, but not so steeply that she could not rest up there with her meal.

AISRA continues to watch Star’s work with a mixture of fascination and trepidation.

It seemed stable, for the moment.
 
She does recognize some of the vials of the more base combinations, an example being Lux, the tome listed it as essentially Light. Another was of ice, a curious combination of fire and chaos.

soon the kirin had returned to the tower, spilling the blood of her victim near the woods and bringing it inside and up into a high place to eat

He raised a brow. What had he done to spook them? This was a little saddening. He continued following him.

“I know what you mean.” They were both in their pony forms, a convincing enough disguise that nopony in the village noticed anything amiss about them. Well, no more than an Everfree-dwelling wizard and his apparent traveling companion would normally be, at the very least. Nevertheless, after the initial stairs following their emergence from the treeline, most ponies simply resumed their day-to-day business as if nothing were out of the ordinary, though a couple mothers with foals noticeably shied their children away from Cobalt’s path as he led Steve toward what was clearly a general store.

AISRA parsed the book with increased vigor, trying to match the vials she saw with anything illustrated in the book. She was showing some signs of nervousness at the prospect of volatile materials damaging the lab…

It seems that she had crystallized Ignis essentia resting on the table, and some vials of more complex ones that AISRA hadn’t read about yet.

It is not long before the sounds of the village become audible to Cobalt and Steve. The only noteworthy sounds coming from the forest seem to have been in the direction of Jinx and her prey.

AISRA looks up from her reading to glance at the crystals Star had, then attempts to match them with the illustrations in the book she was reading.

Star continues her drunk research from the last night, pulling out a couple crystals and watching them closely.

She nods and opens up the book, reading through it page by page with a look of mounting fascination on her little face.

“That and forests are surprisingly easy to get lost in. Theoretically it’s just a straight path from my tower to the towm, but with the inconsistent frame of reference dense forestry provides you can’t always trust your own sense of direction to keep you actually going straight. You’re better off just learning a specific path that gets you all the way through.”

He stuck closely by him. “They’re better if you know how to get away.”

“Hm. Well, i’ll just leave you with the sealed ones then… Here, read the elements and memorize the markings and names so you know what i’m talking about.” Star says, pulling out a leather-bound tome, resting it on a table so AISRA could read it while she retrieves some crystals.
