Tom Brady, to Jared Goff: “Let me see if I can get the grand scheme here, Benjamin Button. Goodell thought that if he locked down all my plays, I wouldn’t have my #LifeHack, and at least one of you could beat me. So when the very fine people of the Referee’s Association, those Kansas City sons-of-bitches, and Drew Motherfucking Brees couldn’t do the job, you thought you, you were the guy!”

Well, originally, football (supposedly, as there’s no real accounts, but they seem plausible) either referred to the fact that they weren’t played on horseback or that the game heavily involved using the feet throughout play. American Football used to heavily involve actually running around before 1906 when forward passes were made a legal move. Additionally, a field goal (kick) used to be worth almost as many points as a touchdown, so, actual foot-to-ball contact used to be much more common.)

As for Association Football and Rugby Football, they likely got their names similarly from heavy usage of footwork, and the rules for play were developed by the Football Association and the Rugby School (in Rugby) respectively. (There’s also other footballs named for where there rules were codified, but they aren’t as widespread now so I’m not talking about them, but these terms were taken to differentiate them from other forms of football.)

speaking of solutions, I don’t think I have much else to add here other than this. Leave american football as it is and the other one, name it european football.

on a more serious note, both brits and americans don’t make much sense, there’s some animosity among them and these terms for them to make any real sense in being descriptive, rather than well known and that’s my point of contention with these names they gave either sport.

Next it’ll be about replacing metric with imperial.

Slightly more serious: as a non-UnitedStatian I’d be in favor of keeping football as football and American football as an easy way of distinction.

Slightly less serious: why not alias American football into rugby? That’ll clear things up right quick.

Heh.

Well, I think fairest would be Association Football and American Football but that still leaves the problem of which to alias where. Fine as is though IMO.

I support altering the “football” tag to “Soccer”.
“American football” Is fine or can be changed to “Football” afterwords if that’s possible.

Okay, so, as you may or may not know, American spellings tend to be the default on tags on this site with alternate names or spellings aliased into them; we call it (and if you pay attention to all the ponies named it too) Cotton Candy here by default and not Candy Floss, also Pajamas versus Pyjamas, but I noticed one inconsistency thanks to an anonymous angry comment on an image.
That black and white ball is aliased to Football while the other Football is named American Football and while I think the latter is fine, the former is a bit jarring as it doesn’t meld well with the American spellings of other words.
Another thing to note, is that Shining Armor’s name is, well, Shining Armor, not Armour; this is another thing to note when looking at this entire tag situation as a whole.

Granted, this is a super minor thing, but I feel there should be more consistency in all this, plus MLP as an entire franchise has been centered to the American market since it’s conception, making itself clear in pony names like Cotton Candy and Tic Tac Toe.

I’ll let all of you form your own opinions and biases and discuss what you feel should be done about the football/handegg/soccer dilemma.

If you do not specify a field to search over, the search engine will search for posts with a body that is similar to the query's word stems. For example, posts containing the words winged humanization, wings, and spread wings would all be found by a search for wing, but sewing would not be.
