He got there by betraying his president, Dilma Roussef, through siding with her opposition (the PMDB party, against Dilma’s Workers’ Party). When she got impeached, he was put into charge.  
Now he’s approving all sorts of unpopular changes such as freezing public spending in education, culture and health for ten years and reforming labour laws to the advantage of bosses.

Believe me, it’s better to just let this guy speak up his bullshit and lose popularity as a result. Heck, he once said in a rally that Brazil is a christian country and that “the minority should curve to the majority”.  
TBH, Bolsonaro reminds me of Rodrigo Duterte, only worse.

The deeper polarization gets the more I fear a return to that nightmare. Neighbor turning on neighbor, careers destroyed, Congressional panels becoming judge and jury.
 
Dangerous portents abound that may spell our return to a darker age. We should be mindful of these.
