The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Feature request: Is webm planned on being supported for image uploads? It’d save you guys a ton of space for animated images + better quality.

@wazkatango
WebM is a video format.
It’s no different than asking to support .mpg or .wmv
That would imply a lot more effort on content control, due to sound.

Not gonna happen any time soon.
But maybe WebP could be supported…

@BigMax

It’s a video container, not a video format. Right now, most recent web browsers have full support for it, and it simply does everything a .gif does (something already implemented), just better. If you’re worried about sound, it can be disabled on upload.

I’m myself somewhat against the WebM format. Its browser support is still almost non-existent; looking at this chart it seems that browsers that do support it have added support in the last 4-5 months. Basically, it’s either very recent Gecko or WebKit, anything else/older and it won’t work. Don’t bother even looking at the “IE” column, you already know the answer.

Then there’s all the work to add support for it in the system. Plus it needs to be thumbnailed, which means resizing every frame and re-encoding the video. Doable, but not cheap.

Lastly, there’s the practical issue of “browser bombing” that happens when you have 10-20 (or more) WebM videos (thumbnails or not) trying to play at the same time. WebM is much more heavier to decode than GIF. This situation most likely slows things down to crawl, crashes the browser, or if the playback is hardware-accelerated it can crash the entire system because the display drivers can’t handle it. That’s not fun.

If WebM support is added, then I beg of you: don’t make it autoplay. Not even the thumbnails.

That’s how 4chan does it as well. If they do ever add it in the future, maybe have a forced “WebM” label on it.

WebM is a container for VP8 and VP9 formats, and you might as well call it a video format, but that’s not the point.
The point is that Derpibooru would have to give support to videos, and that’s not going to happen soon.
Just like support to SWF files.

@JP
WebM support is way more than “almost non-existant”: in the Caniuse page you linked it’s clearly supported by 60% of the user base - which is quite a lot. And it doesn’t matter if the support has been added recently: it has been, that’s all. Chrome and Firefox are “evergreen” browsers, so we can pretty much give for granted that every Chrome and Firefox user can watch WebM videos.
Of course we won’t see IE support for “a while” - it’s not even listed in IE’s to-do list, but that wouldn’t be much important, actually.
But then again, IE8 doesn’t support SVG, and we have quite some SVGs on Derpibooru, and since it started in 2012. Browser support isn’t the point.

And I wouldn’t be worried about the CPU load either. It’s not like you watch two Youtube videos at the same time, do you? For the rest, there’s the page visibility API which is widely supported.
And their thumbnails could as well be gifs.

I have my browser crashed for absurdly large pics. Fortunately, Chrome handles processes separately in different sandboxes. A couple of videos wouldn’t be an issue.

You’re right about the servers that would deal with a heavier load, without any doubt. And surely they can’t afford the extra load, at the moment. But it’s the whole concept of video streaming that brings content control issues.

See my reply in the other thread about the server load and so on.

IE accounts for a lot of users, and as you point out, we have SVG support - but you never see SVGs. You see PNGs. We render those server-side (using Inkscape). SVGs are only shown if you click download on an SVG image. We do this because IE and friends don’t like SVGs, and rendering an SVG is computationally expensive client-side; we’d rather do that once server-side and have people enjoy a nicer client-side experience, since if their browser crashes while trying to render a huge 5MB SVG, it’s us they blame, not the SVG author - and correctly.

Derpibooru isn’t a video hosting site so we won’t be hosting video containers/wrappers as images. Please continue to discuss WebM in the other thread in this forum if you must but I think it should be clear that we won’t be supporting it any time soon.

No, I don’t watch two YouTube videos at the same time. But I do routinely open ~50 new tabs when going through several pages of new images in the morning. If I don’t notice I’ve just opened 20 WebM videos and they all start auto-playing…

I routinely crashed one old WinXP box with only 512 MB of RAM by simply opening 2 or 3 “absurd res” images at the same time. Wasn’t fun.

Inkscape can be used to do batch conversions? I didn’t know that.
Well, ok then. But I think there are some animated PNGs around, aren’t there?

@JP
Naw, they wouldn’t autoplay, of course. That would be silly. You’d have the classic video interface with the play button.
But then again, as Clover stated, this is pretty much a pointless debate.

I didn’t see this in the first post, and I assume that it’s been said before but…
One thing I’ve recently noticed, that I’m really bugged about, is that when you’re having a PM conversation with someone, The top comment isn’t the most recent. It’s the first comment and you are required to go to the bottom. Is there an option to change this, or can there be in the future?

I remember them having a light switch every Earth Day. My suggestion for them is to make that permanent.

(At this point, I think the conversation has moved away from my suggestions, so I’m unsubscribing. Send any replies to PMs.)

@SeraphimDawn
Most of the artists who “call it quits” just… stop posting Pony art; I haven’t seen very many who make a point of publicly washing their hands of it unless there’s some kind of fandom foofaraw involved, in which case most of us will have heard about it already, from the volume of screaming if nothing else.

@Mugen Kagemaru
Something to darken the background without darkening the images (like changing the monitor settings would)? I’ll second that emotion; white/light grey is harsh in low light settings.

So a recent post got me thinking about this, don’t remember if it’s happened before.

If a pic is traced from a lolicon pic but portrays an older character (i.e. >>599602 but more explicit), is it a rule #5 violation? We wouldn’t be able to show it’s lolicon since we can’t post or even link the original.
onepinksheep

@dt
That’s rather off-topic from the purpose of this thread, but a quick answer: If the character looks underage (regardless of artist intent, eg. even if the artist says the character is intended to be an adult), and the image content is sexual in nature (eg. rated questionable and above), then it’s a Rule 5 violation. Also, we judge only the content of the uploaded image, not whatever other pic it may be inspired from. If the character is clearly an adult in the uploaded image, then it doesn’t matter if the image/pose is inspired by a lolicon pic.

I know it’s sorta off-topic, but I didn’t wanna make a new thread for it. Also, it’s funny because your answer goes against what I’ve been told by another mod, who basically told me If the artist says they’re older, they’re older.
onepinksheep

@dt
Well, Rule 5 is one of those things that is so subjective that we prefer to take them on a case to case basis. There are a lot of images that are ambiguous enough that whether or not to remove them is more or less up to the attending mod’s discretion. I’m not saying they’re wrong nor am I saying they’re right. I’m simply saying it depends on the image.

I would like a .json command to get the total number of results for a search. Possibly something like /results.json?q= . It would take the same parameters as /search.json but would return something like “{“pages”:300,“total”:4499}”.
