I imagine the griffons are Klingon-ish Frenchmen, but the ponies don’t have a history of war with them.
 
No, all the wars have been with the dogs. As in, the same species as the Diamond Dogs. They’re to Batarians what griffons are to Klingons.

I like to imagine Diamond Dogs actually have a very progressive and civilized society, and the group that kidnapped Rarity is just a band of outcasts/criminals. Because if it turns out ALL Diamond Dogs are immoral, sub-sentient degenerates, then this show about friendship will officially have too many always chaotic evil species.

My headcanon regarding Diamond Dogs and griffons is that neither one really has a society or civilization, but for different reasons.
 
With Diamond Dogs its because they are a.)subterranean and b.)they form packs, but their societies never get larger than whatever mine the pack lives in. In fact if one pack of Diamond Dogs meets another they are more likely to squabble over territory than to work together. I’m not going to speculate on their moral character since all we’ve seen of them is “A Dog and Pony Show” and one of their abandoned mines in the comics, and frankly thats not enough information for me to hazard a guess on, however if they do come back I hope its as good or preferably neutral characters as I’ve always hated the “always chaotic evil” template.
 
As for griffons, they don’t have a society because they are by nature solitary hunters, at most gathering in prides of six to ten in areas where game is scarce or competition is dangerous and even then a pride is less “society” and more “protracted argument with brief windows of cooperation”.

Sub-sentient implies they’re literally animals. And I never said they were all evil, just that there’s been a history of hostility with the ponies.

In my headcanon, the Diamond Dogs are a bit like dwarves. Yes, they do have an mostly-underground civilization and keep mostly to themselves, but do occasionally travel to the larger cities to buy, trade, and sell to the ponies. The dogs seen in “A Dog And Pony Show” tried to do a “get-rich-quick” scheme by kidnapping a unicorn with a gem-finding spell (Rarity).

This. I hope they revisit the Diamond Dogs, it would be good to have a better understanding of them.
 
In my headcanon, just like the Buffaloes, they were native to Equestria long before ponies settled the land. They were hunters, gatherers, and miners, and to a small scale, farmers. As the ponies that later settled began to occupy the surface and using up their resources, many Diamond Dog packs were driven deeper underground and many began engaging in bandit activities. They also have a strong Bro Code custom that makes them close nit. They were Equestria’s original gem users.

-Sombra can regenerate from his scattered pieces, but with all of his horn severed, he’s reduced to a mindless, feral beast prone to berserk rages until it is reattached.  
-Cadance by her nature, is very gullible and trusting. Capturing her took almost zero effort from the changelings.
 
Random filly: Princess, you have to help me! I lost my puppy in the secret crystal mines under Canterlot that few know about!  
Cadance: A lost puppy!? Hop on, we’ll find him together!

Speaking of Diamond Dogs…
 
In Diamond Dog culture, females with well-toned and developed muscle are the attractive ones since it shows that they are hard workers.
 
Also, large age gap relationships are common, but are considered inappropriate to talk about.

That actually seems more like a trait of ponies in general than of Cadance in particular, but then why wouldn’t it be? They live in a world where hatred is a non-survival trait as it feeds famine inducing spirits of pure malice.
 
Then again, this theory is undermined by Bridal Gossip, and the general reaction of Ponyville’s citizens anytime something remotely threatening happens.

It would seem they’re trusting when dealing with other ponies and famililar things, while unusual things (ie things outside their power) are treated with suspicion.

Which actually makes a lot of sense. They’re ponies. Of course they’d be easily spooked, and it can’t help that they live in an absurdly hostile world.

Yeah, I guess it just becomes more obvious when done in a world of magical fantasy and numerous technicolor magical sentients.
 
Still, has it ever struck you as weird that nobody seems to be doing anything about the Everfree forest? Their society depends on weather control that works everywhere but there, and nobody, not even Twilight, is researching it?. Hell, as far as we know, nobody’s even trying to cut it down…
 
For all their power of their environment, ponies are still extremely superstitious.

Equestria seems to have mixture of ancient, medieval, and modern elements. There is a term or trope for that, can’t remember which one…
 
Perhaps there are alot of things out there beyond their control. Even alicorn ponies have their limits.
 
Makes me believe their are Dragons and other creatures out there that are more powerful than even the ponies’ alicorn princesses. Elder Dragons that are more powerful than Celestia, how about that.

Celestia isn’t omnipotent. She’s not even the strongest thing on screen. The first episode had her defeated by Nightmare Moon offscreen, and it’s never been clear if Nightmare Moon is actually stronger than Princess Luna.
 
There are definitely things more powerful than Celestia. Even with the ability to turn day and night, the ponies still don’t rule the entire world.

Celestia seemed to come out of the sun, was unable to stop Nightmare Moon, and used the Elements to fight her a thousand years ago. Sure as heck implied a fight happened, even if Celestia took a fall the second time.

I think Celestia may only have control over the sun in the Equestrian side of the world(pretty much the entire western hemisphere.). At the end of the day and night, they hand the celestial objects to other nations in charge of their hemisphere of the world, those who posses magic strong enough to manipulate the object of course.  
The reason why Luna’s resentment was hazardous was not only because the Equestrian would suffer, but the world. If that happens, other nations would declare war on Equestria, so Celestia sealed NMM as a quick desperate measure.

Celestia was Starswirl’s student until she solved his equation of friendship. Twilight wasn’t the only one that solved what to do.

Fluttershy’s dad is a nature scientist pegasus named Sir Prickleberry who has written several works on Equestria’s wildlife. His inability to gain any useful information on dragons is his greatest challenge.
