Yeah, concept sketches don’t quite strike me as official (too bad sometimes, ‘cause the initial Ursa Major prototype was gnarly). I’ve seen plenty of fanart using that fem-drake sketch as a design base, which seems fair enough-lotta variety between individual dragons. As for Steve, “river serpents” could easily be a closely related species.

Well, I think at some point Faust had drawn a grown female dragon, but that probably doesn’t count too much anymore.

And, if he counts as a dragon, Stephen Magnet certainly had hair as well

Oh, it’s clear enough you’re just sticking to vavacung’s work. Tweaking it excessively would require their permission anyhow.

Since Crackle seems to be our only confirmed onscreen female, adult dragons might not be as sexually dimorphic (square-jawed dudes, dainty-snouted gals) as the ponekind average, and personality isn’t necessarily dictated by body type (or vice versa). That said, plenty of difference between even Spike’s two growth-accelerated incidents, so your mileage will definitely vary on his adult appearance. Whatever works for the story.

On the other hand, some dragons seem to sport lush heads o’ hair, and Crackle had eyelashes. Interesting mix of reptilian & mammalian traits.

Guys granted he does look feminine it’s how the original artist had visioned an older spike. We’ve known spike not to be this super masculine kind of dragon anyways so it’s a bit obvious he wouldn’t grow up looking completely masculine. I color these things in the artist’s original form with minor adjustments. It’s up for interpretation but the lash like thing on his eyes in my opinion don’t make this any less of a neat design for spike.

Umm.. to make this more masculine… maybe if those eyelashes had the same colour of the ears or the colour of the spikes..
