Removing the ability to downvote from the thumbnail is a bad idea; it’s like adding a free extra taunt to every trolltastic shitpost just to make life a little sweatier for downvote fetishists, because now anyone who wants to downvote their MS Paint Hitler Trixie Dildo Rapist picture has to go through extra effort to do so. This seems like something that’s going to needlessly increase drama by forcing someone who was already pissed off by an image– but willing to just downvote it and move on– to instead go into the room where people are talking about it and do it from there, where they’ll be more likely to get involved in a conversation that shouldn’t have included them in the first place. It’s banbait. I know I certainly get plenty of cheerful, enthusiastic responses and healthy intellectual discussion any time I actually go to the comment section and point out what objectively dickish behavior it is to come to an image booru and post screencaps from 4chan instead of just keeping it on 4chan where it belongs. Now I can’t just downvote that inherently bad garbage from the spoilered greentext or text only tags on the thumbnail page, I have to actually go in there to do it, which increases the likelihood of slowing down long enough to say something about it, and that guarantees a delightful exchange of respectful disagreement courteously presented, because the average 4channer is more easily offended than the average PinkiePony.

This change is almost certainly going to have the intended effect of reducing the amount of drive-by downvotes from casual haters, which is fine for preventing good art of weird fetishes from being downvoted by casual dopes who can’t just let other people have their freaky kinks, but it’s also going to condense the source of the downvotes to People Who Care Enough To Take The Extra Effort, which is exactly the sort of person you don’t want opening the image page and going into the comments in the first place.

@Clover the Clever
I’d complain more; having the ability to Up/Down from a thumbnail page is a good thing as far as I’m concerned. I really don’t need to waste my time or bandwidth looking up close at a two minute MS Paint picture of Sonic pooping on Rainbow Dash to know it deserves a metaphorical middle finger, and an awesome picture with an absurd res tag is still awesome enough at the smaller size to not warrant taking all day to load on a weak connection. Opening new windows/tabs is also a chore on most mobile devices, especially iPads and their joyously magnificent awesometastic GREAT inability to do two things at once.

A whopping 4.92% of pictures on the site have a negative score.
Question: If we removed the upvote button from thumbnails too, to bring us into line with other imageboards, would you (small, vocal) lot complain less or more?

5% isn’t a tiny number. What is the percent of pictures with more than 10 downvotes, by the way?

I’d prefer both upvotes and downvotes displayed instead of just one number, but giving upvoters and downvoters the same treatment would be fair I guess. I don’t see this as an improvement from the previous state though.

For a comparison of how much less used downvotes are compared to upvotes, have a graph. I will stress this is not all the data we used in our decision to sacrifice that particular element.
That smells of average patient temperature in a hospital: one is dead, another has fever, but the average is 36.6C, so everything is perfect.
Yes, most pictures are upvoted. But there’re pictures that are mostly downvoted, and for a reason. What you’re saying with this graph is that downvote button is useless for most pictures. Why, yes, sure. But there’re other pictures! Bad pictures!

@Bryce
How do you shorten those with hundreds vote then?

This is unfortunately the issue - you still need 3 characters even if you abbreviate 4+ characters. And we do hit those 3-4 character numbers quite frequently in terms of site usage - bear in mind things like the list pages for highest scoring etc, which are quite frequently used.

So everyone who uses your website just has to trust you, because you say so. To make judgements about user activity without actually using anything resembling gathering statistics on said behavior. Ultimately making judgements on what you think user activity is.

Um. Yes?

You trust us with lots of things, like not losing your personal data and not forgetting to back the site up. We also store data about how the site is used and can read that and make informed decisions about it.

I just wanted to say that the proposed solution of making it all fit on one line by abbreviating high counts (e.g. 4000 -> 4k) is excellent. It would be an outstanding and easily-implemented compromise solution to restore the neigh button and abbreviate high numbers.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Next time a move like this is made, I would like some sort of forewarning to be given on the front page–somewhere where people like me who usually do things other than bum around the forums all day are likely to happen upon it.

This. Whenever an admin here, usually TSP, says they had a thread about it in the forums, I’m reminded of that bit near the beginning of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy where Arthur Dent is told he has no right to complain about his house being demolished because the plans for it were in a(n out of the way corner of) the planning center for months.

Do you approve of the new YouTube comments system too?

Actaully I don’t see what’s wrong with it. They broke replying to old comments, but other than that I don’t see any regressions. Maybe I’m not commenting enough on YouTube to notice… Anyway, merely integrating Google+ doesn’t warrant all the whining and bitching about the update. Forcing registration on Google+ before that was more annoying. And the settings button on videos, for that matter.

Background Pony #DF9D
Everyone else is already making the points I’d make, I don’t have the time or energy to stay up and read them all, and I don’t think my voice would be heard among all the rabble anyway. I’ll just say two things:

First, I don’t like the removal of the downvote button on the main gallery/search page, because I often downvote images I dislike based on subjective quality. Read: I’m highly critical of OC designs.

Second, this UI change came as a shock to me, and ruined my night. Next time a move like this is made, I would like some sort of forewarning to be given on the front page–somewhere where people like me who usually do things other than bum around the forums all day are likely to happen upon it.

Don’t know about you all, but I’d rather trust the decision of someone who has been monitoring and running the site for 2 years than what anyone else suggests “is best for the site”.

Of course we make suggestions to make the site better, but it makes more sense to leave the decision making to the mods rather than trying to force what is right or wrong on them.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Guys, you are doing it ABSOLUTELY WRONG!
Instead of disabling downvoting on thumbnails, you should display both upvotes and downvotes. Instead of telling artists, “Nobody dislikes your art”, you should tell, “Lots of people like your art”.
I hate with passion those stupid pricks who downvote based on fetishes. Art with weird fetishes receives so many downvotes that both score numbers and sorting by score becomes pointless.
But with your solution, instead of giving more information, you just receive less. I don’t see how it improves the website. Maybe it looks better for a few silly artists who worry about downvotes too much, but on the whole, it does more harm than good.

My nigga.

Can’t you have coders make them not use so many digits? Shorthand to like 1k upvote and have the full numbers appear on the tooltip just before the tags. Besides, having precise comment numbers does not seem essential.

And scoring.I personally prefer if the upvotes and downvotes are separate, but that’s just me.

@The Smiling Pony
To clarify, the small number of times it’s obvious from the thumbnail than an image needs to be downvoted. Kind reminder that if downvoting from the thumbnail had existed in Ponibooru, Weaver’s comics or Wollap’s creations would have likely been votebombed and killed prematurely.

@Werkbau
We anticipate a “worst case scenario” of 4 digit numbers in faves, score and comments. Faves haven’t reached the 4 digit point yet, though comments have exceeded it. At that point it’s impossible to fit another button in, at least not without making the entire thing a confusing mess.

Also I need sleep and then work, so gn everyone.
