Ok…. Lots of fanarts in hindsight made a lot years ago.
I would have written the Problem to be:
Zecora’s own parents were talented in alchemy much like Zecora is, but because it wasn’t something like Unicorn Magic or magic artifacts, there became a problem; no she wasn’t shunned because of it, her parents were overwhelmed by how many folks came for their remedies. Zecora was learning how to make them, but it was slow going. One day the worst case scenerio happened where Zecora was to make her own brew. There was an illness going around and she was to make a preventative medication for it, but she mixed it wrong, making a “case of the sniffles” turn into “bedridden and horribly sick”, turning the entire village into a sickly mess. Because of this, the village was in an uproar, but Zecora’s parents tried to take the full blame, but Zecora couldn’t let that happen so she admitted it was her brew. This results in her being pushed out the the village for her brew failure. Zecora moved to the everfree on the outskirts of Ponyville to continue learning and perfecting hew brews to prevent it from happening again, but the very idea of returning to a village where she was forced to abandon her own parents and facing the onslaught of her first failure (that could have potentially killed the whole village, for all you older readers who can see more details in the writing), a faulure that effectively killed a chapter of her life, is a horrifying prospect.
There is no reason she couldn’t rejoin former friends to make a new team, but what we really got dropped the ball HARD.
Yeah, that’s pretty much my beef with it. It seems very OOC for a normally mature, calm, respectful, wise, and friendly character.
I mean they could’ve justified it better, like if her friends were actual jerks, or if she had a better reason to flee her homeland.
Also, her snapping at AJ, and comparing it to her dead Mum seems very unfair in hindsight, as frankly Zecora’s “one-sided argument with her former friends,” can’t be compared to AJ growing up without a Mother. Frankly, AJ’s backstory is more sympathetic, and relatable, while Zecora’s makes her seem selfish.
I normally like the comics, but even I think this is bad writing, and I don’t like how it portrays Zecora.

It kind of is in retrospect after you learn about the circumstances around her leaving Zebrica later on. Blowing her top over being asked to go back to a place where… it turns out Zecora had a bunch of supportive friends who genuinely liked her and were sad to see her abandon them by going on some crazy mission to the other side of the world to make potions that nobody was even sure was even possible?
Just makes her look like some sort of petulant child throwing a tantrum in this scene, which is the exact opposite of how you’d expect her to behave based on literally every single one of her other appearances in the show and the comics.
Edited
What northern haste said. The issue here is that Zecora brought up Applejack’s dead parents, and that’s an INCREDIBLY low blow. You can convey her anger without being tasteless.
Her Getting angry isn’t the problem
These guys turned up drama with the lack of rhyming, made it wholesome with more rhyming, and cinched it with a joke that lampshaded the lack of rhyming to bring the tension back down. That’s called pacing. That’s called “a set up” and “a pay off.”
Go back to reading more fanfiction nerds. People paid to do this are way better when it’s clear it has passion to entertain and not motivated by wish fulfillment headcanons.

It could be because the comics made me more strict on how I feel the characters should act. If you were to show me different scenes from the comic, I could tell you my opinion on them and maybe you can prove me wrong.
That’s true but there’s still so much that hasn’t been done!
It does. And everybody else do seem to be enjoying it.
It’ll probably last till the story end. I just hope no complications arise.
Well, I don’t know how long they’ll last with the G5 reboot coming, and all.
Well, I’m not a super Transformers fan either, but I think it still looks good.
I don’t know if I can even enjoy the earlier stories anymore since even they had stuff I felt was too distracting or not quite accurate to the characters.
Indeed. Even people who make edgy humor about other cultures don’t feel that way about those cultures.
I said months ago that like the other comics, these Season 10 comics can be considered optional canon as well and I don’t want to jump on that bandwagon yet.
I really wanted all of the IDW comics to be extended canon since I crave for more official FiM content but I had my hopes too high.
At least another year?! No, they need to go on longer because FiM means so much to me.
It does look cool but I feel like you can fully enjoy if you are a Transformers fan as well, which I am not.
The comics are kinda hit, and miss. Shame, because most of the earlier stories (whether life, or adventure) were good, and par with the show.
Yeah, I swear it’s especially annoying when the people being offended usually aren’t said culture…
Yeah, though whether it’s the “official” Season 10 is up to the fans mostly. The comics for better or worse, have always sort’ve been an extended or alternative canon, depending on the story. Still, I guess it’s nice the comics will continue for at least another year.
Not to mention, the MLP X Transformers IDW comic crossover looks pretty good.
But even I have trouble trying to get into those stories since I crave the more serious & adventurous stories. And when I did read the comical/slice of life stories in the comics, I felt like even they fell a bit flat compared to the show.
Because there’s way more dumb people in our world more than people who can comprehend others’ take on other cultures that are trying to be as respectful as they can.
They do. But before becoming the official continuation of the show, they had good ideas in theory but executed poorly.
He is good with emotion but he overexaggerates too much way too much that the expressions look OoC to me. In the example you showed me, I don’t like the expression he gave Luna. To me, it looks like Luna felt personally attacked by her sister. She really should have just rolled her eyes instead while also pointing out that Celestia is guilty of some mistakes too.
Tempest and Capper especially stars in the comics more than the show where they’re just given a cameo.
Yeah, I agree. Though, sometimes they have good stories still, it’s usually the more comical, or “slice of life” stories that are better. Whenever they try to be serious, or adventureous, they occasionally fall flat.
And that’s not because it’s a licensed comic, the Sonic & Megaman comics are great, and handle things better.
I thought that Zecora political-correctness drama was dead? But yeah, that might he partially why they’re afraid to use her. (Also, Zecora’s voice actress is black, and if she has no issue with Zecora, then why should all these white people be so offended on others’ behalf?)
But yeah, I guess it’s a shame the show wasn’t able to build on Zecora or her culture. One thing I’ll give the IDW comics are, they at least try to build on characters, and things the show doesn’t.
I dunno, I think Price can do emotion pretty good sometimes, but he can overdo them too, like any artist. But admittedly, sometimes I like his exaggerations, when they fit a situation. (The above AJ & Zecora moment… Not so much.)
He’s especially good at comical/cute moments.
I love these 5 expressions, especially grumpy Luna.
Edited
I’ve ragged on the comics like everyone else ever since issue 25 but even I admit I’ve given them too much crap. The problem with a lot of the stories is that they have great ideas both with concepts and characters (and I think the characters should at least get more fanart) but they weren’t executed properly, and its a real damn shame to see that happen over and over.
Zecora was barely given any development in the show all because of peer pressure from dumbass SJWs who want to shout “RACIST” at anything that depicts a foreign culture in cartoons. If this weren’t the case, episodes dedicated to Zecora outside of her debut episode would have happened and we would have gotten proper development.
This could also be because I’m not the biggest fan of Zecora so maybe that’s why I’m oblivious to this whole controversy.
Personally, I’m fed up with Andy Price’s angry faces along with his other signatures in his art. They really take emotions out of any scene and I hated it when he did those with Celestia and Luna.
I dunno, I normally give the IDW comic series more slack, then most other bronies, because honestly I think the comics have potential, are overhated, and honestly have some good stories/art sometimes. I actually still like the comics, despite their ups, downs, and fan-controversies.
Still, I can’t really defend this. I’m just kinda annoyed by this depiction of Zecora, and it feels like they’re trying to give her a “tragic backstory” for “teh dramaz,” but it kinda falls flat, because it’s hard to sympathize with her with how she’s portrayed, and it’s difficult to understand why she hates her friends/homeland, as honestly they aren’t really as bad as she acts, making her hard to sympathize with.
And things like, “We’re supposed to be mad at AJ, like Zecora was for being insensitive,” (when Zecora acted debatably worse, ‘cause she basically started yelling, rather then try to approach the situation calmly like she’d normally would, making her feel OOC. Plus that remark about her dead Mom also feels like low-blow, and OOC) so frankly, admittedly even I dislike this.
Only good thing I’ll say is fan-favorite artist Andy Price does a good job, though is kinda overdoing the angry faces a bit.
Edited
Well if we had gotten this kind of development from Zecora in the show, then I would care a bit more.
@Beau Skunky
I’m trying my hardest to give certain parts slack because this is the only thing that’s giving FiM new official content to work with. Is everybody really going to undermine everything else aside from this?
Edited
@Red-Supernova
Yeah, it does seem OOC, and as the comic progresses, it kinda makes Zecora out to be even more petty, and like the one who’s the jerk. (And her friend issues kinda contradict how friendly she was when she first met the Mane 6. If she was that anti-social, why would she open up so easily?)
And yeah, bringing up AJ’s dead Mom is a bit uncalled for as honestly Zecora’s “friend/old home” issues don’t involve a dead relative, and aren’t as comparable to AJ having to grow up without a Mom.
Edited
Not even remotely. It’s the dead mother of one of her friends. It’s even worse coming from someone who in the show proper was portrayed as this Yoda/Gandalf/Iroh-like fountain of wisdom.
Edited
Its a dick move from Zecora but understandable why she did so.
From what I can tell AppleJack wanted zecora to Come with them to her homeland and the zecora is mad she didn’t actually ask first
Edited
This again? Zecora brings up Applejack’s dead parents, and it’s her not rhyming that bothers you?
I don’t feel like they failed here. Zecora rhyming all her life didn’t feel plausible.
Context: Writers failed.
